My gerbils - pics!

Hi,

So I thought I should send over some pictures of my little girlies, Itsy, Bitsy and Ditsy. They are rescue gerbils but I can't believe how stunning they are! They were dumped in a box with three boys, after a month in quarantine surprisingly none were pregnant so they must be very very young.

Anyway we had a lot of fun tonight when they had their first ever sand bath. These girls are just awesome.

Unfortunately, Bitsy is a bit camera shy!

Itsy - black and white. Ditsy - dark grey - she's got dark eyes too but got red eye in the picture.

I'm too cute and I will smile for the camera!

Sharing a bath - well why not!

xx

Re: My gerbils - pics!

I'm still getting used to them as these are my first, but they are lovely little things.

Gerbils in general are known to be fearless! They are just really curious about their environment, so they make for great pets. My girls are from a rescue and haven't been handled much, for this reason they are slightly more nervy I think then gerbils in general. They don't bite though and they are fascinating to watch. I'm getting used to them as much as they are getting used to me, but so far we're doing good I think!

The only downside I can think of keeping gerbils is finding something suitable to house them in. The pet market just doesn't seem to cater for gerbils properly or give that much choice. They advertise hamster cages as suitable which they aren't! Because of the lack of choice of cages to buy it means either you have to find a second hand perfecto - for some reason I couldn't find anywhere that sell these new, or buy an aquarium. There are two gerbilariums that have a plastic case and a topper, which seem ok, but I haven't seen them properly to suss them out. The aquariums though are really heavy - the perfecto's are good but the glass shelving makes it a royal pain to interact with them. Also the aquariums don't really suit having a wheel, which is annoying because I got them a brilliant one but within five minutes it was covered in substrate!

I think a perfect cage would be a light weight glass of some sort with a deep base tank for burrowing and then some sort of heavy duty (not plastic) tubing into a seperate area where you can have their wheel and food - but I'm not a fan of wire - I worry about their little feet. Maybe the savic XL would be the best bet - but I don't know it doesn't look that great to me, I'm just not sure the base is deep enough. It's only 56cm high for the whole thing.

But gerbils are awesome and I'd highly recommend them if someone was looking for a small pet. They also help with recycling....any box will be destroyed in minutes - its awesome, like your own personal shredder

Re: My gerbils - pics!

I'm really into rodents and small mammals. I did read about gerbils, I was considering getting gerbils or rats before I got my degus. If I had the room in my bedroom I'd get some I'll be moving out in about a years time and I'll probably get some gerbils. I always consider getting animals from rescue places, so I think I'd look there first

LOL no not a designer baby - it's just the name for her colour

Actually if you look at her nails are they lightish or dark? If light she's slate, if dark she's Burmese
