I agree, 3 1/2 years is excellent for a hamster. We lost ours at around 2 3/4yrs, and I was so upset. He was really my daughters, but as so often happens, it was me who ended up feeding/cleaning out, and he became part of my night time routine, and although he wasn't exactly a cuddly boy and didn't really stop still when out of the cage, he was always at the bars to say hello whenever we went into see him. It took a long time for me to get used to not seeing him just before bed.
