Hamster scent & territorial question

I have a quick question about hamster “scent”. Whenever JC is in his ball, when I take him out – it’s always got a white type serum spread inside. I thought maybe he was getting ‘excited’. Anyway Princess was running around last night in her ball and same thing……so now I’m wondering – what is it?

Also, I was wondering, do I need to get all three of my hamsters separate toys or can they use the same toys? I was wondering about the scent marking?? And whether them exploring toys that smelt of another hamster would freak them out? I'm thinking of wooden toys here rather than plastic which you can just wash.

Also I’d like to set up one really big ‘Adventure playground’ area for all three of them to use – obviously at different times!! Again wondering about the scenting, so for example, if JC is in there and starts rubbing his bum up against a toy and then when he is taken out and Prince Philip put in – how much is the scent of JC going to upset Prince Philip?

Does that make sense?!

Re: Hamster scent & territorial question

from the female its most likely discharge from being in heat which should be cleaned out or itll stress other females (territorial) and fustrate males (they cannot get to her to mate)

depending where it came from on the male hamster it could either be 'excitement' if its like a gel, an infection if its constant in his scent glands especially if theyre being constantly licked and groomed indicating that theyre sore and inflamed or just scent secretions does he smell musky or have greasy patches of fur on his flanks if hes a syrian? (male dwarves secrete a lot in particular from the scent gland on their stomach which tends to be more yellowy)

having hamsters out in turns in a big adventure pen would be fine unless one was ill or in heat (in which case id let the female out last) just make sure to clean wees and poops inbetween to keep it hygenic, no need to scrub everything down though. i would however wash inbetween species if you have more than one type of rodent thatd be using the play area

Re: Hamster scent & territorial question

No infections as far as I can tell. JC does tend to have the wetter patches on his back - but he's healthy, eats well, runs all night - so no infection. He's been like that since we got him. No signs of ill health and I think if it was an infection he would have deteriorated, instead he's just getting bigger and blossoming into an (completely unexpected) long haired beauty

He doesn't smell - so I think it's "excitement" but he was like that even before Princess arrived (only had her three days).

How long does a female hamsters heat last?

Re: Hamster scent & territorial question

a hamster goes into heat every four days lasting only a dayish but it can vary to 3 days or 5 days lol

yeah then it is probably his scent glads as theyre wet nothing to worry about as some hamsters dont smell musky and some smell quite strongly long haired hamsters are so cute!
