My new little bubbas!

Here's my two new additions to the family... Batman & Robin! The names were my son's idea. Batman is the one with the dark patches going down to both eyes.

I have a couple of questions. When I'm taking them out and introducing them to me to bond, am I best doing it one at a time or both together? I've read I should limit time out to 20 min sessions while they are young, maybe 2-3 a day if poss.

My Freddy 2 will be arriving on Wednesday. Will they be ok going straight into that with hanging toys etc or could they hurt themselves falling in the early weeks?

Food, do I just leave a bowl out topped up all the time?

Hopefully these piccies will work. x

Re: My new little bubbas!

Aww how cute are they and love the names!

On taking them out whenever i have new rats i get them out together, i feel they are more confident that way. But they will either stick together or just go exploring especially as they are youngsters they wont be lap rats just yet. I would try getting them out together at first and then seperatly, as for time thats up to you but 20mins is good.

When you get your new cage dont worry just pop them in and i bet they will have the time of their lives, new stuff = fun for them. Rats are smart and shouldnt have any problems, freddy 2s arent especially tall either.

Foodwise i always do fresh bowls each night, i dont know what size bowl you have but i mostly use the bowls with rabbit written on them, for a pair of rats i fill it just above half each night - sorry if that dosnt help you its just hard to say how much to feed, someone else may know actual measurements. I also feed extras most nights too like veggies, meat etc

They are gorgeous!!!
I'm bonding my babies by putting them in a homemade fleece pouch thing and sitting it on my chest while chatting to them and stroking them it's working slowly

I'd fill out the freddy just make sure you hammock out any biggish falls

They will need some extra protien ie kitten food 2-3 times a week till they are around 10-12weeks

Re: My new little bubbas!

Thanks all. My son said I was being daft when I suggested we call them Wee Wee and Poo Poo.

They are very sweet rats and I feel I'm making a little progress with the bonding as they're becoming a little more adventurous when I put them on the bed. They certainly like going down the front of my top and being cradled lol.

I'm using a small bowl at the minute but I'll upgrade that, and giving extras like cooked veggies and small bits of meat etc. I'll pick up some kitten food in the morning. What about normal cat food mushed up? Is that a no no?

I can't wait til Wednesday and the new cage arrives, it can't come soon enough for me, it's like Christmas is coming early lol.

Re: My new little bubbas!

Haha wee wee and poo poo They sound lovely, i give my rats applaws wet cat food or gourmet gold or perle. I used to give mine iams dry kitten food soaked in soya or goat milk - you dont have to soak it though. Things like dried mealworms/crickets/earthworms are high in protein and good for babies too. I love getting new cages too im used to buying 2nd hand but recently have had a few new ones

Re: My new little bubbas!

they look tiny how old are they?
they look like my husky rats that are only just 5 weeks old from stafford.

they will need a good rat mix and not reggie rat.
they will need lots of protein like scrambled egg, sardines, cat meat.

give them foods like porridge, curly kale is great for babies.lots of fresh veggies and fruit.

i always leave the bowl of food down and only top it up when it near empty or if they leave the bits they don't like then i re top it up.

as for falles in the cage make sure u put in lots of hammocks to break there falls, ropes and shelves are also good but rats love hammocks!

they are beautiful by the way.
