Lone female gp in p@h adoption centre (advice please)

Recently I've been venturing into my local p@h more often, due to my daughter wanting to look at all the small furries and I've noticed for the past 3 weeks or so there's been a lone female gp "Bella" in their adoption centre. The reason for her being there is that they said she has been unable to be bonded with other piggies (aggression).

I'm against getting pets from pet shops however I hate the thought of her being there for weeks to come whilst people gawp at her through the glass.

I can easily buy a sizeable indoor cage for her (120cm) along with all the other bits and bobs (hay, food, toys etc) but that will take a week or so. I wouldn't want to take her without having everything in place first but I feel so confused

SHOULD I take her knowing she won't be used to being handled, and had ultimately come from a rodent farm.
SHOULD I take her knowing that she *may* have to spend her life alone without having company of another piggy if bonding was to fail (I would of course attempt to try and bond her with another piggy, hopefully with the help of my local gp rescue).

I do know that there are cases where you just can't get the a gp to bond with another.

I just don't know what to do

Re: Lone female gp in p@h adoption centre (advice please)

I dont go in p@h because I have no idea where there is one!
And although I am against rodent farms and pet shops selling animals I also think that every animal deserves a home, they dont ask to be bred in bad ways.
Sometimes I feel pet shop animals need homes more than ones in rescue because at least in rescue they are already being looked after properly and will go to a lovely home, god knows where the little p@h pets end up.

If I were you I would take the little piggy (and give a very small donation!) Try and bond her with another and if that doesn't work then at least she will have a great home where she will be loved and cared for.

I think also sometimes pet shops say and animal is agressive and what not because maybe the animal has been a bit moody or has bitten but that could be due to poor handling, being bored/depressed.
Lots of times people get the animal home and find they are not agressive at all.

I hope that made some sense!

Yes it did, thank you!! x

I'm gonna get onto Zooplus and order the cage tomorrow, hopefully it'll be here in a few days...just need to tell hubby!!!

Good job I've just cleared out one of the spare rooms - you would've thought it was with the intention of moving animals in!!

I was under the impression the money didn't go to PAH when you get from the adoption centre...

But yes just get her, try and bond her with another, but beware if it's true and she won't bond, you will then have the bond the other one with another pig and have 2 separate cages.

Bonding can take months though!

As someone who recently bonded 2 piggies with two separate piggies (MALE!) then I would say go for it. Piggies are sociable animals and bonding generally isn't too difficult!

You obviously know about them and you can offer her a good home. She has obvious taken your heart

Re: Lone female gp in p@h adoption centre (advice please)

Sorry I haven't been on to reply earlier but just to say that I went to see if Bella was still there before I ordered the cage etc and she had gone I suppose I should be happy as she has obviously found herself a new home but at the same time I would've known where she had gone and been able to give her a good home myself if she hadn't...

Anyway just thought I'd let you know, thanks for your input in this matter. x

Re: Lone female gp in p@h adoption centre (advice please)

Hi,

Deffo recommend taking her to a GP rescue. Make sure it's a good one by doing some research, but those places work magic and I'm sure they will have her bonded up with someone in no time.

Come on to the guineapigforum website - all the rescues are on there and would be able to help and guide you about where to go.

You could of course look for a neutered male as an option.

Get the piggy, get the piggy!
