Old rats

Most of my rats are pretty old, but Alice who is the oldest has always looked youthful, shes a double rex so she looks tatty but shes beautiful and full of life until recently, she seems to have suddenly become an old lady, she sleeps a lot more and shes slower doing everything. Is this just a general old age thing or would bobbing her to the vets maybe be a good idea. her breathing is fine, shes peeing and pooping ok, shes eating normally and not loosing weight she just seems really tired. Shes only 29 months so shes not ancient but shes still a pretty old lady.

Re: Old rats

Sounds just like old age to me. One of my old guys tends to sleep most of the time now and he wont use the top half of his jenny anymore, but hes still perfectly fine like your girl. Even during free range time he'd rather snuggle in his bag than go anywhere. I would just enjoy her, she sounds lovely

She is an amazing girl, she had lived alone for nearly a year when I got her and if ever a rat needed company its her, she went from a timid girl to the snuggliest girl imaginable overnight, shes everyones favourite amoungst the other rats too

Re: Old rats

There was improvement but that was cuz I moved the 3 in our bedroom then hubby went mad cuz noise so there in the lounge fireplace had to be moved.again hubby not happy!

But Wen I did this my boys went back to there normal playful selves.
When they were free ranging they weren't even bothered about climbing the drawers to get to the girls. They didn't scrap all they did was snuggle and climb over me. Play with each other and when they went back in the cage were all mellow chilling on the shelves and hammocks.not running round chasing boxing each other.
Checked over them all today no signs of bites or cuts.
Jamie said it was peaceful nite I told him to leave door open just incase they started. All he saw was my 7 month coley wolley playing with 9 week old denzel.

She might be, I'll pop another box of tissues in and a heat pad for tonight when the heating goes off.

Re: Old rats

If it was sudden then I would be worrying about things like Pituitary tumors.

It seems to have come on over about a month, gradually getting worse. Are pituatary tumours treatable at all?
