Annoyed by impulse buyers

Starter Hamster Cage | eBay

so i was looking around ebay for some spare cages and came across a description of some parent selling the hamster cage and getting rid of the hamster after a week because of her daughter chaning her mind

ugh! you cant just expect a hamster to be your best friend instantly after buying it! especially in a strange new home and cage

Pets are for life not 1 week. Lets hope the little furry gets to a home that looks after it. Anyone that fickle will probably forget to look after it

Re: Annoyed by impulse buyers

As a parent myself, it's a difficult one for me.

If a hamster bit my daughter and it made her scared (which is what is in the description) which means she wouldn't handle it, then YES I would rehome the poor thing because it won't be getting any attention and would be ignored.
HOWEVER on the other hand, NO I wouldn't rehome the hamster as I'd like to teach my children not to be afraid and because we took on the responsibility of an animal we have a duty to look after it as taking on pets shouldn't be done lightly.

if it came down to it, I think I'd choose the latter. Children need to learn that it's okay to be scared, but they need to be confident and overcome their fears. If a hamster bit her then it's likely he or she was mishandled or was scared, so then you'd take this time to educate your child which you should've done before, on proper handling and how to make them feel comfortable.

I made the mistake once of buying gerbils for my daughter and she ignored them after a while like they always do, they died not too long ago and I said the next pet she could have would be a fish. So she's chosen a plec to go into my tank

Re: Annoyed by impulse buyers

i agree! i think the parent should have realised theyd be the main if not sole carer for the hamster anyway when buying a hamster for a child etc

i guess im mainly annoyed by the fact that shes probably going to be getting a guniea pig now, what if that bites her in fear too? back to the pet store for the pig so she can choose something else :/
