Re: Gerbil help please!!

I think if shes chewing the bars badly enough to rub fur away I would be tempted to move them into a big tank with no cage topper, some gerbils just dont do well in tanks with cage toppers, Im assuming thats what youve got and not a cage, gerbils should never be kept in cages as they need really deep substrate to dig in, they live to dig.

I really would get a different home for them, those gerbilariums (regardless what P@H try to tell everyone) are only suitable for one gerbil and even then they are a bit small imo. I would think if shes chewing bars that badly they would be better off with a big tank, the perfecto tanks are pretty good but they arent cheap so an old fish tank with home made lid would be better.

Re: Gerbil help please!!

hi, as advice already given, cage really isnt that good. I have one of those that i bought as an emergency when i cracked my Three Tier Hamster / Gerbil Glass Tank | eBay
and i also have a Extra Large Gerbilarium by Pets at Home | Pets at Home
basically both are ok, but a bit on the small side. The bigger the better and the tank ones are the best. You can fill the bottom with allsorts, not just sawdust and do you give them lots to chew like toilet rolls?
I also have Play Pen for Hamsters by S.A.M. | Pets at Home and we fill it with boxes and tubes and things for them to have a play in.

they need quite a lot of stimulation. Do you give them a sandbath too? Dust Bath for Chinchillas by Boredom Breaker | Pets at Home they love this and is good for keeping them clean.

Its a symptom of obsessive behaviour so its mentally damaging to her but unless she breaks the skin its unlikely to be physically injuring her, it might cause bruising though.

Yes it is something to be concerned over, you need a bigger cage/tank those things are terrible I'm afraid and def not suitable for 2 gerbils.
