Re: My rattie boys

Looking forward to seeing some ratty pics!

As for bowl ditching, I still use mine - I wouldn't want to deprive the furballs of the sheer enjoyment they clearly derive from destroying my neat little set-up and throwing their food everywhere

Re: My rattie boys

At least yours spread their food around! I've had to ditch the bowls for the two young groups of four because in each group, there's one bullying, bowl-hogging fatty and although even the smallest boy is a good weight, I'm worried about Lavender not getting enough food because of Mimi being a dominant fattie/bully.

Re: My rattie boys

I haven't ditched the bowls completely (fish pie isn't great scatter fed, more like splatter fed!) but I scatter feed a couple of times a week & also use egg boxes & old socks to hide their food & make them use their brains to get at it

Re: My rattie boys

have read about scatter feeding but am reluctant to ditch the bowl completely. my three seem pretty good at sharing from the bowl and they are all roughly the same size. also first time I have kept rats and puts my mind at ease when I see an empty bowl. I try to provide them with little challenges tho to get some of their favourite treats - hiding it in boxes with shredded paper, making little parcels and hanging them up so they have to chew through or rip open the parcel to get it, hiding it in a treat ball which they have to roll about to get it out. only Cooper seems to have figured out the treat ball and is very good at rolling it about to get the treats. the other two have figured this out or are just lazy and follow him about waiting for food to appear and then dive in!

Re: My rattie boys

Dumb camera battery died mid-shoot! I managed to get a few quick ones though.

The current setup:

Disturbing them from their sleep, they crash around all night, daytime is sleeptime!:

They are suspicious :

and the two old boys retirement pad - they're 2 years 7 months old now, and still chugging on!

Re: My rattie boys

I scatter feed, and have done for over a year. I've never had any problems with it, and my girls are able to find even the smallest bits of their mix.

Re: My rattie boys

aww lovely pics of your ratty boys

My 3 boys love their abode cage. I also always scatter feed them as they seem to really enjoy having a good old rummage for all the best bits first lol!

Re: My rattie boys

They do seem a lot more enthusiastic about dinnertime now! And it's keeping them busy, whereas before they'd just sit around the bowl, now they're all actively searching - I do notice when I'm cleaning out that there is often no food left in the bedding
