Rat grief

Im struggling with Cookie at the moment, she lost her best friend Itsy this week and she is grieving quite badly still, she is eating still but she is just moping about and isnt going in the wheel or wanting cuddles, shes just sitting in the hammock watching everyone else, the other rats are trying to get her involved but shes just walking away when they try to play with her. Has anyone else experienced this and what can I do to help her

Re: Rat grief

About 2 yr ago I took on a couple of rescue rats (Bug & Mischief) who I put in with my other two girls Puffin and Dappy. They had all been living together for maybe 6 month when Mischeif died of reasons I dont know. Bug ended up so withdrawn and started sleeping on her own. I didnt know that rats could grieve so hard until then. She eventuly came out of it and went back to her normal self but it did take a long time.

I am soo sorry to hear about Itsy and I havent really got any advise for Cookie apart from spoiling that girl rotten.

Give her a belly kiss from me xxx

Re: Rat grief

Fluffy went through some pretty hard grieving when we lost Banoffee in June. She's started coming out of herself now and getting more involved with cuddles but it took a good few weeks - I didn't really know what to do other than make a fuss of her regularly and hope for the best...to be honest, she's still a bit of a loner but she is a bit more active than she was, she went through a couple of weeks of literally doing nothing but lying in the hammock looking sad...it was heart breaking so I do feel for you having Cookie so down.
Fluff's become quite clingy with me and won't go to anyone else now but like I said, she's started being more active and playing with the others during free-range. She's also started sleeping in the house with them again - I guess it's the same as us, it takes time to get over a loss.

I hope Cookie reverts to her normal self soon, just keep loving her and I'm sure she'll start responding - thinking of you both

Re: Rat grief

I think some are more sensitive than others & go through a grieving period, sorry I can't offer much comfort for her (except please give her a scritch from me) but hope she feels better soon xx
