Update on hamsters ......

To all of you that offered help for these guys when I posted last week, I thought I should give you an update,Good news and bad news is that when my friend went to collect them there were only 3
The previous owner was a little bit blase about where the other 11 had gone,.

Lil miss , I think what you said about them turning on each other could have sadly happened, especially if you could imagine all of them squeezed in the tiny cage they came with, with an empty food bowl and no water bottle.
Quite surprisingly, they are all quite friendly and come up to the cage bars, and even graced with with a little handle of them
They all look to be underweight,so a gradual feed up is nessecary and thankfully they all look the same "down below" .
Their coats seem to be a little greasy and scruffy, can I offer them a sand bath?
I am sure I have read that dwarves can have sand baths,
purple x they are dwarves of somekind and are all real darlings, as there are only 3, I expect I will be keeping them all.
They have been moved into a more spacious imac fantasy,x3 and seem to be loving the space and toys
Just wanted to say thanks again
And will try and get some photos for identifcation purposes

Re: Update on hamsters ......

Oh my they are so fluffy and so cute! Yay that you're keeping the 3 of them, although I really do wonder what happened to the others.

They look like my Zeke did, he was a hybrid. Although some people said he was a russian campbell dwarf.
I'm not clued up about breeds/sorts at all so I just went with what other people told me!

Oh you said you have all of them in a 3 story Imac? These kind of cages aren't so great for multiple hammies as they can become territorial over the levels and fight.
A single level cage is best, for the 3 of them I would recommend a zoo zone 2 with obv 3of everything (3 wheels, 3 houses etc)
Yup they would love a sand bath. Just make sure you get chinchilla sand and not the dust.

Cant wait for more piccies.
Well done for rescuing them x

Re: Update on hamsters ......

i would say they are probably crd/ww hybrids, really hard to tell from the picture, a 3 tier imac is not sutable im afraid (especially not if it is true and they have already turned on the others) they need a large single level cage, with 3 wheels and they would be better scatter fed then fed in a bowl

Re: Update on hamsters ......

Are you anywhere near me (Huddersfield)? I will probably have a more suitable cage you can use till you get one sorted.

Re: Update on hamsters ......

thanks all for the advice re cage ..my bad
I am watching a savic ruffy at the moment would that be more suited to them? I could have this by Friday.
they do have a bed and a wheel and a food bow; on each of 3 levels and seem to have chosen a level each, and not bothering each other too much.
Gogsmother, thank you for the offer, but I am way down in Devon so sadly can't take you up on the offer.
I will try and get some better photos, as I didn't want to disturs them too much.

purple-x, they are very cute and lovely to watch. Will be taking them out for a proper play and handle tomorrow,
Thanks again
