Getting really annoyed at people :(

I am getting so angry at the amount of people just giving their rats away for free with no second thought

I was just looking on preloved this morning at rats, i dont know why i do it as i know it annoys me but today there were far more than usual people on there looking to give their rats away I understand that people do have genuine reasons for needing to rehome but some ads were like rats free i need rid of them but i want the money i paid for the cage!! No care for where ratties ended up.

Being the sucker that i am i have offered a home to 4 girls that arent far from me. But i am now wondering if i should take more in and try to rehome them myself through sites like this one? I have the space, time, love for rats and i have several large spare rat cages. I am also aware of the costs as most of my rats were from free sites and lots came in right states or with tumors so spent alot of time and money at the vets. I luckily have one very understanding other half too

I know, it annoys me too! My sister used to own rats and they were the most beautiful, intelligent creatures.

You could do if you had the time and space, my friend rescues rabbits and finds them new homes. She also does rabbit sitting and combined with the rescue it's her main job, she absolutely loves it!

Re: Getting really annoyed at people :(

I actually told myself no more rats after ive seen so many go through awful tumors but i cant turn my back on them, last year i rescued 2 rats from someone on preloved and they were the fattest rats id ever seen!! They were being fed on birdseed, were so big they couldnt groom themselves so had become greasy and lived in an awful cage on sawdust with no toys. The woman claimed her brother gave them to her and she didnt know what to do with. I took them home put them in a new cage without sawdust and plenty of toys, put them on a diet and brushed them with a toothbrush, i had them for about 6 months as sadly they developed huge fast growing tumors but for that short time i know i gave them what they should have had all along.

If it's something you're passionate about it's definitely worth considering. Just make sure you don't take on too much, I've seen it happen before and the animals end up worse then they were before.

Re: Getting really annoyed at people :(

im trying to find a place for 3 does at the moment

the lady seems to really care about them and seems to be doing everything she can to find a fab home wish more people were like her, if i had the room i would take them in a flash but no spare cages nor spare money at the moment and i know if i go and get them i'll end up keeping them which isnt realistic for me at the moment 14 ratties is plenty lol

Re: Getting really annoyed at people :(

Im down to 15 rats now and wont be getting any more , Im finding the heartbreak of loosing them too hard (Ive lost too many recently and Ive got one very special girl wasting away before my eyes ) , so I dont go near any of the animal advertising sites, Im too soft and would just take them all on. If youve got the time, strength of heart, space and money though I would go for it.

Re: Getting really annoyed at people :(

So sorry to hear about your girl i know how that feels and the loss of all your others And Daynna good luck in finding the girlies a home.

I used to use one of the spare bedrooms in my house to keep my rats and called it my rat room, i think i may have to do that again, the most ive ever had at once was 16 and that was alot of work as there was alot of seprate cages. Though free ranging wasnt too bad as even though some couldnt live together they were happy to roam together (obviously not mixed sexes). I only have one elderly rattie at the moment, he lost his cagemate a few months back and he lives downstairs in the living room.

Re: Getting really annoyed at people :(

So had a long chat with the OH and he has no problems with me helping out ratties aslong as i dont let them free range on his pillows lol,

I am collecting 2 does with three 1 week old babies tommorow, no history given, person just wants them gone, they even said i could collect now but i said i will be there 11am tomorrow. Cage is far to small 24ins length and 12 ins high, it makes me so bloody annoyed!!! but i was very poilte to the person as i want to get the rats away from them
