Unhappy mr rat

well i have taken on a rat,its been a while since i've any rats in the house except of course my gambian pouched rat queenie!
but i took this little man on off preloved site.

anyway lets just say he's not in a good way
he's as thin as i don't know what,u can feel his spine and ribs, his coat is manky and grubbing looking.

they said they wanted a better home due to there child picking and poking at him and yes he is scared and trys to bite when he's in his cage.
however once out of the cage he's lovely,a bit wriggly but doesnt bite.

i can't be doing with peeing about leaving him to settle,i've had rats before that weren't handled and got straight to handling them even if i did get nipped/bitten and they were lovely after 2 weeks of intense handling.

so anyway got him out after being nipped,he doesn't like his body touched inside his cage but i'll soon sort that out.
got him out on my lap and shed a tear at the sorry state he's in and condition of his coat, weight etc.

dosed him in a beapher spot on.
and tonight he will be eating homemade tuna bake.
he's already had a bit of pear and carrot,oh and i've had to go out and buy some rat food as what they gave me was guinea pig food!!!!

after a few weeks of him being here i will be getting him 2 male babies to join him, from past intro's with males they've never really gone that well but i'm hoping it will with this one.

oh i've named him bungle and he's around 1yrs old she says and he's agouti hooded.
his cage that he came in is 70cm x 40cm x 46cm
needless to say he will be getting another cage when i get him some friends.

i'll get some pics later when i get him out again.

Re: mr rat

This makes me furious... Why wait until the poor critter is in that state to realise you can't provide the love and attention it needs?! I don't think I could ever do it, go and stare that person in the face without causing them GBH! On a plus note its great that you are gunna make the rest of his life an enjoyable one, and tuna pasta bake sounds yummy bet he will love that! Might dish mine up some haddock and pasta for tonight thinking about it

Re: mr rat

Thing is I couldn't see just how bad he was until they had left.
They made out that he was fed this and that but to me that was crock.
I'll get him fattened up soon!
He's just yummed up sweetcorn nom nom nom.

Re: mr rat

At least he is in good hands now can't wait to see photos of the little critter my boys are suckers for mealworms and shreddies! have to try and limit the amount one has or he would become a huge fatty, he is a big boy anyway 550g+! Currently putting together the bottom half of their new cage for when I move house on monday and its huge... 3 boys in a Savic Royal Suite... I think they are gunna enjoy it I always thought it was a big cage but not that big! Haha, it dwarfs their ferplast furet XL! I'm hoping in the near future to use the old cage to rescue a pair or trio from my local rescue centre and try and integrate them with my boys and slowly increase the population in my savic

Re: mr rat

The last two rats I had weighed in at 800g and the other 1.2kg!!
Obviously I won't be letting him get that big though! Lol
