Info wanted on caring for mice please!
I'm thinking I would like some mice. It won't be for a good while yet as I still have my gorgeous rescue ham and I hope he'll be around for at least a year. But I like to cram with info when getting any new animal.
Soooo micey people, what do I need to know? Obviously I'm going to read up on the internet but I like info from people who've actually kept mice. I have a mickey max cage (don't like it, too small), an imac fantasy with extension, a savic freddy, lots of rota stak (don't like). Would any of these be suitable? Best substrate (I know no shavings)? Food? And yeah, basically anything you can tell me. Thanks a million, Em x

Re: Info wanted on caring for mice please!
How many mice are you after? A good rule is too double the numbers given here Rat cage calculator - though bar spacing needs to be 1cm or under to prevent escapees. I'd personally say try for a trio of rescue girlies, girls shouldn't be kept alone and three is safer in case you lose one too soon
![]() Male mice are really difficult to keep together happily, though if you do go the rescue route you might find a neutered boy to go in with your group. I found my neutered boy was a lot more laidback than girls, he was a sweetheart ![]() I had a group on a Freddy 2 rat cage which works well. Definately agree, don't use the rotastak! This should help give you an idea: mice cage setups. Substrate wise I used megazorb, which is basically a cheaper/finer version of carefresh but some people find this quite dusty so it depends on your local supplier I think. Other options are finacard, bedexcel, and Ecopetbed. Diet wise I think some people adapt the shunamite diet for rats, since they have similar requirements - Another linky. Anyhow I'll let someone else say something now! ![]()

Re: Info wanted on caring for mice please!
Thanks will go look at links now. Just looked at some pics and its the freddy 2 I have not the freddy.
I was thinking 2 girls, never thought if one died. A trio it is ![]() We used to use magazorb for the bunnies and piggies but stopped as it did go very dusty. My only issue I have is working on the mother in law. She looks after the animals while we're away and she does not like mice. Well, she says it's just the tails ![]()

Re: Info wanted on caring for mice please!
Oh but their tails are so sweet!
Mine will often sit right up against the edge of the cage and all of a sudden the tip of their little tail will come poking out the bars of the cage, it really is adorable. I have a pair of mine in a mickey 2 xl (same size as the hamster heaven) and they love it in there. My 5 are in a freddy 2 max right now but as they are very lazy girlies they dont make use of all the space so I will be down-sizing them soon. I use megazorb as it holds their tunnels really well, they love to make tunnels and sleep in them even though they have lots of houses. Just make sure you give them lots of things to climb on in their cages as they love to climb ![]() Oh and it you're adding a wheel then a 6.5" silent spinner is great. |

Re: Info wanted on caring for mice please!
I think their tails are sweet too, and their ears.
I have a couple of those silent spinners. I'm assuming most of the hamster toys I have would be suitable. I have so much in the loft it's not even funny. The OH wants to sell it all on ebay. I want to fill it ![]()

Re: Info wanted on caring for mice please!
I saw that before and moved swiftly away! The OH would not let me at the moment, even though we have plenty of room for them! And I think I need to do a bit more research
