New home!

Oh happy days! Salt and Pepper have a new home. It's HUGE! This is a pic. It could comfortably house a couple more ratties shhhh don't tell Dave!

I dont think they've taken the move very well. Pepper is on the bottom floor hiding in the log cave and Salt is sat up on the top sort of snoozing. I don't think they know they're still in the same cage! But in good news, Salt let me pick her up today, no biting, I spoke to her before i did it, i stroked her before i lifted her and she didn't fuss at all. Yay!

If you dn't mind me asking, what is it about them you don't like? I've just watched Pepper try to climb the sides and then fall. She's gotten me all worried :-/

Many, many reasons lol, but off hand, they are a nightmare to clean, you have to cover the shelves otherwise you risk bumblefoot, access is a nightmare, you can't fit many toy's in them as the doors open inwards (although you can take them off and change that). I just think you can get far better cages out there for a similar price

ETA: also as they are metal rat wee rusts it very easily and then the smell becomes impregnated and not nice at all.

Re: New home!

People do tend to either love or hate those cages, and I do agree with B3rnie that there are better cages out there. However if you've already bought it, don't be too put off! I used to have a couple of these and I really liked them, and I keep kicking myself that I got rid of them when I moved!

I find the access very good on them - the doors are nice and big and the whole of the top lifts up, so there isn't a corner you can't reach. Definitely turn the doors around so they open outwards though (this is very easy to do)!

I took out the full wire levels and used ferplast corner shelves instead, to open up the layout and encourage climbing. Or if you wanted to you could cut the full levels up and make them smaller, though as B3rnie said, they would have to be covered with lino or something to protect little feet.

As for the rusting issue, I never had a problem with that and my cage got scrubbed and showered down in the bath every week!

I think my issue with that was the cage came with a huge rescue I did and because the cage had never (by the looks and smell of it anyway) been cleaned out so no matter how hard I scrubbed it still stank of rat wee

I think one of my favourite days with that cage was seeing it get thrown in the dump LOL.

But each to their own I guess

Re: New home!

Thank you for sharing I was thinking last night I wanted to cover the shelves with something but I couldn't think what with, lino is a great idea.

Obviously I'll try and keep it all nice and clean and rust free. We took it because it was offered to us for £35 brand new and far bigger and nicer than the converted bookshelf the girls were living in but I don't think it'll be a long term thing, I don't like the inward opening door either!

Re: New home!

You can change the door donor open outward

I don't mind them and £35 is a great price for a new one all I would do is buy some ferplast pink shelves and take out the metal ones

Glad they have extra room I bet they will love it!
