Rattie - Blocked scent gland?

I've been a little worried about Rufus lately. I was handling him a few days ago and noticed a little lump on his side with a rough bit that felt like a scab. On closer inspection, I noticed it was a small hole with a yellow, crusty lump inside, blocking it. Is that his scent gland? I tried loosening it out with some boiled water and cotton wool but it didn't budge and I was at it for about 20 mins. It hasn't gotten any worse since then (as in, no more has built up inside). Will it break down on its own?

Re: Rattie - Blocked scent gland?

Did it look a bit like this (just imagine the fur)? That was when Pierce had a blocked hair duct (apparently hairless rats are prone to it)

Looks slightly like that...but not gooey looking, it's perfectly dry.

Re: Rattie - Blocked scent gland?

I'd say it's either a cyst or a small abscess.

His was totally dry, it looked wet there because the vet had ben trying to get the scab to open up by soaking it.

Re: Rattie - Blocked scent gland?

Ah right...any idea how to get rid of it then? I tried giving it a good soaking/rubbing/squeezing to try and pop it out but it didn't budge :/

I bathed in salt water for two weeks and gave him Baytril to combat any infection (although there was no sign of any), by two weeks it had gone down and the scab had fallen off, he has a tiny scar but if he had fur you would never notice he ever had anything there. I would still let a vet look at it though just in case its anything more serious.

Re: Rattie - Blocked scent gland?

Sounds like a cyst, they are often harmless, and very common on older bucks especially.
