Re: Ok I think I have gmr :( what's the cure??

Just be careful not to get out of your depth too quickly. I took on a young mother and 7 babies, rehomed 2 and kept the rest. I had five rats already, then took on another 2 rescue girls shortly after. At 13 rats, I was definitely over my limit.

Might not sound like much but when you have a group of 5, a group of 3 and a group of 4, of different genders, it really gets difficult in time and expense.

Sadly, three of my older rats left me between August '10 and Jan/Feb '11, which has eased things off a bit, but I still feel like I'm pushing it with 10.

Not saying you will get out of your depth as easily as I did, but I know how hard it is to resist GMR (or GMC for that matter), and when you bring in a lot of newcomers within months or weeks of each other, you don't tend to notice the strain til it's too late.

Re: Ok I think I have gmr :( what's the cure??

I first got rats last year, I got two bucks...who were does, Chandon and Perign. Damn I wish they were bucks, then it wouldn't have been so easy to introduce Moth (RIP), and Rumba...who of course came with her sister Bambi, then Grace....oh and the castrated buck, Django. All 6 live together in a Liberta Explorer and love it. There are squabbles but I find they tend to pair off if anyone falls out and they are a close group. I have been strong and not added any more due to wanting to be able to afford vet bills.

I'm having a very very bad case of GMH(amsters) at the minute though :/

Completely agree with Argent too... I got my lot quickly, and as much as I love them, that huge cage is a LOT of work to thoroughly clean every week when I already have college/work. 6 is defo my rattie limit.

Oh don't worry I know my limit 6 is it, I'm a stay at home mum so time isn't an issue that way

I think that's why I'm stating with girls no worries of babies then lol I'm starting to save for an explorer or something similar because of room wise

I think youre all very brave having so many rats I only have some boys and some girls (see how I cleverly avoided saying how many and made no mention at all of the mice, gerbils and hamsters) . Im definately going to let my numbers drop when they go to the bridge, the pushier rats definately get more cuddle time than the shy ones which would probably not happen in a smaller group.

Oooh I so know what you mean. Grace and Djan are much more quiet and I don't really have time to spend one to one with everyone often enough to make them braver. I'm a bad rattie mummy which is the reason Moth was not replaced...not by a rat anyway...

I haven't replace my mice or lemmings either, purely so I have more time for my other mice, ham, ratties and ferret.
