Why is it roborovskis always have to be seperated before long?

I have a couple of roborovski females(Normal Agouti coloured)that i've named ''Suki'' & ''Bella''-they're both pretty as well as beautiful robos-hence the reason for calling them these names which mean beautiful.

Why is it roborovskis always have to be seperated once you've had them for a month or two?Why do they get on great at the start & then fall out and start chasing each other, fighting and drawing blood?
Every time i've kept roborovskis as they're my favourites hamsters and have kept them for many years now-they always end up being split up after so long.

Winter Whites are the same-we've kept them too in the past and they also have to be split eventually.

Is it best to just buy a single robo on its own rather than get two-then they end up falling out which means buying another cage.

It seems no hamster whether its a dwarf or syrian can live together peacefully-therefore it does seem a waste of time getting a pair-but they seem to be more lively and active if you buy two.

Have you found your robo's to need seperating too-or am i just unlucky with them?

Normally because they become territorial, thats why cages without levels are recommended.

Also if you don't have one of everything for each hamster (i.e food bowls, wheels and houses) they can start guarding them

Smile Re: Why is it roborovskis always have to be seperated before long?

I took on a trio of rescued robo brothers last year. Sadly one died but the other two are very fit and healthy now and adore each other, always playing and love to sleep curled up together. They live in a Perfecto tank on my desk here so I can keep an eye on them. They will come and take food from my hands now but don't want to be handled of course which doesn't bother me as they are fun to watch. If they do ever need to be split then I have a spare cage ready but as they were from the same litter, they appear to be very bonded.

Re: Why is it roborovskis always have to be seperated before long?

my guess is, your cage is not suitable to house multiple dwarves

when housing multiple hamsters together you need to have a large SINGLE level cage or tank, no levels or anything, you also need atleast one of everything for each hamster, waterbottles, wheels, houses ect ect, and you are better off scatter feeding then feeding in a dish

syrians HAVE to be housed alone

Re: Why is it roborovskis always have to be seperated before long?

My robo girls are coming up to their first anniversary sharing a cage.

My winter whites only lasted about 6 months together.

Cages without levels work great!! Not all this rotastak crap.

I did find when I had female WW's and Campbells all they did was fight and I had to get 3 seperate cages. Trick is to get boys! Male hamsters are laid back whereas girlies are bitchy! The reverse of most species as boys are usually the territorial ones!

Re: Why is it roborovskis always have to be seperated before long?

I often think when I read about these dwarf and sharing that maybe they just dont have the room and space they need as well as enough items in the cage to keep them quite happy.. They are just my thoughts.. x

Re: Why is it roborovskis always have to be seperated before long?

I've tried with both Robo's and Chinese and never had any success keeping them together once they have matured and they have been in large single level cages. Had a pair of Russians years ago that got on very well but found out why a few weeks later when they produced a litter of babies. They were meant to be two females. I only buy hamsters in ones now.

Re: Why is it roborovskis always have to be seperated before long?

I had three girls (mum and two daughters) in the largest perfecto three level cage.
There were only one bowl, one water and one house and two wheels.

No fights. They were fine. They had lots of toys and lots of space. That's the key.

Re: Why is it roborovskis always have to be seperated before long?

I too had 2 male dwarfs in a 3 level cage (fop gimmy) who were very content their whole lives. Granted I had 2 food bowls (but they both prefered squashing into the one bowl at mealtimes), 3 beds (again they prefered squashing in together in the one bed), 2 wheels (which they both never used at all), and only one water bottle which there was never any fights over. Maybe I just had weird hamsters but other than the odd squeak at each other there was never ever any fights and both lived happily with each other.

This was before I heard about multi level cages causing territorial issues, maybe mine were just a fluke so I would still always recommend single level cages and multiple's of items for hamsters.
