just come back

from the vets. She's said that she thinks my rat has got something up her nose which is making her sneeze and the wierd noises that I've heard are her talkin to her sister. She's also said that she doesnt sound chesty or anything like that.

She did give an anti biotic injection and has given us baytril for her to take twice a day for 10 days. We've got to take her back on wednesday so she can see how shes doin.

I just hope she starts getting better now.

Just out of curiosity, does you vet treat many rats? Was she injected with baytril? If so then I would keep an eye on the injection site as its not a good idea to inject baytril into a rat unless its serious as they can end up with a burn ulcer.....

Re: just come back

I think fuzzymum means what substrate do you keep your rats on- wood shavings & sawdust aren't recommended for rats as they can aggravate respiratory problems

Re: just come back

All rats carry it, sometimes it lays dormant, then other times it makes the rat sneeze etc. Agree with what Petitepuppet said about injection site, keep an eye! Also what dosage did the vet tell you to use with the baytril?

5 weeks is very young to leave their mum, it has probably stressed them out ALOT and that could also cause sneezing. Did you get them from a pet shop or a breeder?

Just read your other posts and if they have been housed on woodflake for 5 weeks, it is inevitable that they will sneeze. Another good thing to use is paper based cat litter, like BioCatolet, not dusty like the carefresh. xxx

Re: just come back

I cant remember what the vet gave her. I got them from a pet shop who also sells, gerbils, mice, and loads of other animals.

We've got to give her one drop of baytril twice a day. My husband has said about gettin a shredder and gettin some card and using that.

Re: just come back

oh my they're very young, didn't know they were only 5 weeks
also what are the 'weird noises' that the vet thinks is 'talking'? As squeaking during play/allogrooming is normal but grunting or dove-like cooing can mean respy infections
I personally didn't like Carefresh as substrate as it was quite dusty, unlike Ecobed or Finacard
saying that, I've just ordered Hemcore for the first time this week, as I was curious
