She doesnt nest

Since getting Luna she has decided to sleep in the Hamster Heaven tubes but the majority of the time she doesnt use any bedding whatsoever. She gets giving that shredded paper stuff from P@H plus shredded toilet roll but only uses them to block the tubes up (at one end, which I've now capped and she doesnt block it up anymore).

I'd like to encourage more natural behaviour, ie nest building. Any ideas as to how I can do this?

I dont want to remove the tubes as when I did it last she seemed really stressed plus I dont mind her sleeping in there, I just wish she would nest build. It's not that hot in our bedroom (where her cage is), rarely going above 20 degrees C.

Re: She doesnt nest

My Syrians always use the Penthouse on the top to nest in - unfortunately they wee in it too, little mingers. I use the safe bed stuff and just put it in there. Misty (the only syrian we have now) sometimes throws some of the bedding out and puts it at the bottom of the cage but she has taken to using the long tube as food storage now and keeps all her food in there.

I had to take the penthouse off... Luna decided she prefered living in there and ignored the rest of the cage It stank!!!

The tubes are now used as a bed, food store and toilet but does use the rest of the cage unlike when she had the penthouse.

Re: She doesnt nest

I had a syrian quite a few years back and he had tubes in his cage, he started to sleep in them all the time with no bedding or anything. I did try taking the tubes off but he got annoyed!
He just did that for a few months and then as he got bigger he started to sleep in a 'proper' bed.

Maybe as Luna gets a little older she will start to sleep in the cage instead of the tubes.

Hopefully, its not that I mind her sleeping in there I would just prefer her to exhibit more natural behaviour if you see what I mean. I do like being able to see her sleeping, certainly when she's got her little feet in the air

Re: She doesnt nest

My Old hamster (didn't have a name as I kept calling him the wrong name, grieving for my old hamster ) used to just lie in the tubes, at first I wasn't bothered but unlike yours he used to just ignore the cage! I got so frustrated I removed the tubes and he started using his bed and I put them back on, maybe put the bed back in for a while?

Re: She doesnt nest

Sorry, no clue. Starlyte does the same thing in another cage. I thought about taking the tubes off until she moved. But that would make her cage really small as she'd only be able to use one section.

Re: She doesnt nest

That's weird because fluff has just started to do exactly the same thing for the past two weeks. She has a little igloo house which she used to sleep in but she has since discovered her hamster heaven has tubes and she sleeps in the tubes. She gets her bedding and blocks up one end and poos there too??? very strange, i just leave her to it, I've left her house in there incase she changes her mind.
