Rat tails...

Do they heal properly? I cleaned out Alaska's cage last night...only to find some wierd inch long wormy thing...realised it was one of my girl's tail!! I was more worried about the hamsters being injured by rats....but she has bitten toes as well...she is being properly bullied by Alaska...a tiny winter white!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyways so I need to do anything. Looks healed but couldn't catch her lol!

Perhaps what niki87 means is that maybe one of the rats was climbing on Alaska's cage and got bitten through the bars?

Rats do tend to heal pretty quickly by themselves, but if she has bitten toes as well as tail she may need antibiotics or even painkillers...

Do you know when it happened?

Re: Rat tails...

If her tail has degloved you need to take her to a vet asap. It's not uncommon but it's very painful and very easy to get infected.

I assume you are not keeping a hamster and a rat together. Your rat should not be able to get to your hamster cage and vice versa. My hamster cage is next to my rat cage - but on a table so that they can't get to him. It can be traumatic for both species to be in close proximity to one another.

Re: Rat tails...

Oh dear you mean I can't keep all my hamsters and rats in together????????

I can only laugh at the people who suggested that am afraid!!!

And in my decent experience of rats....tables are not an obstruction!!

What's degloved? It is only just under an inch of the tail that has been removed.

I don't keep hamster and rat cages next to each other!!! But on opposite sides of the room. I have to let the girls free roam up there though as I have the boys down stairs. Might put her (Alaska) on kitchen worktop when they are out....just didn't wanna keep moving the cage.

Re: Rat tails...

It's where the skin is stripped from the bone, which remains attached to the rest of the tail, degloving can also happen to their hands & feet
If her tail's degloved it would look like this (don't click if you're a bit squeamish!)
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...eGMXkAqiMQ&t=1
& would need to be seen by a vet

Re: Rat tails...

I would still see a vet. Nerve endings could be exposed or allsorts. As I said it is VERY easy for tail injuries to get infected and it's not fair to not get her checked over.
