Unhappy Blind Biting Rat? Help? and is she ok?

Hey I've currently got 2 Female rats Cupcake and Playdoh.

When i bought Cupcake she was the only Female left so i bought her on her own, a few weeks later i got another female to keep her company (Playdoh).

Cupcake is perfect She sits on your knee, licks, plays games all sorts.

Playdoh was very scared, use to try and bite me a lot i tried all sorts, She's calmed down a bit now but still sometimes bites when you try to pick her up.
I recently found that she is Blind and this is ofc why she is biting as she gets scared, as she doesn't know whats going on...

I've tried just putting my hand out for her to sniff, making noise before touching her so i dont frighten her and treats (she pounces at the treat and often bites me instead lol...)

Any1 got any other ideas as to what i can do to try and get her more use to me?

I'm worried about her, She doesn't do alot, Mostly sits in the corner Although she does like to eat everything and anything with in her reach.
She has no other health issues..

Is she happy? and ok? They don't really play together much.. Is it ideal to get another rat?

Thanks x

Re: Blind Biting Rat? Help? and is she ok?

How do you know she is definately blind and not just nervous of hands clasping around her? As a pet shop rat (I'm assuming til informed otherwise), she will not have the best relationship with human hands tbh.
Red/Ruby-eyed rats have much worse vision than black-eyed rats, whose vision is terrible to begin with, they usually rely on their other senses anyway, so she might just be a particularly jumpy one? Or overzealous when it comes to treats :P (one of mine put his teeth through my fingernail for some noodles!)

Try some down the jumper bonding, sit with her in your jumper and just let her mooch around and get used to your scent without your hands being on her, that could help calm her when she smells you nearby.

Unhappy Re: Blind Biting Rat? Help? and is she ok?

Hey,
I've had her now for 6 months, She bites even when you don't have treats : /

She's had issues with falling off shelves running face first into things and I've taken her to the vets.

So i'm a bit stuck as what to do : /

Poor pud, I don't think it's normal for her to run face first into things - that's what their whiskers are for. I wonder if she has some sort of neurological issues...

The only advice I can give is talk to her loads, and try the 'down-the-jumper' method to bond with her a little better. Having Cupcake around should help give her more confidence, it can take time for them to bond completely

It tends to be when they do play and chance each other round jumping about and stuff she obviously ignores her whiskers lol, She seems happy in herself

Thanks x x x x

Re: Blind Biting Rat? Help? and is she ok?

When she bites is it a test bite or a proper I want to hurt you bite? Alice (rescue girl) used to always grab my finger when I went in the cage, as soon as she realised I wasnt food she would let go and it never really hurt. It didnt really bother me and shes grown out of it since I stopped offering her treats from my hand.

I was wondering this too...I wouldn't risk getting properly bitten again, you can tell when they're going to do it lol Test nibbles are a pinch at worst. Does she make you bleed?
