New Hamster owner
Got a hamster today was given a cage but want to improve it and wondered if you could give me some advice on the best things to get to improve it.
We got him one of those tube see saws in pets@home and a wooden gnawing toy also. He also has a cardboard tube. Its an old cage and has wire shelve so want to cover them with something better for his wee feet. What would be best? Oh he is a syrian hamster.

Re: New Hamster owner
What size is the cage you were given? The bigger the better.
![]() Hamsters need plenty of exercise so getting an exercise wheel would be a good idea also they like to gnaw so maybe provide the little one with cardboard tubes (toilet paper tubes - you can even leave a few sheets of toilet paper on it so the hammy can rip it up to use as bedding) or wooden chews that you can get in pet shops. They are all different though and some hammies dont bother with the expensive things we buy for them ![]()

Re: New Hamster owner
Someone on here (cant remember who) put lino on the cage shelves
The wheels will need taking out as they are way too small for syrians. I would rather leave them out altogether than leaving them in asthey can damage their backs running on them. They need their backs to be straight when running, but on a wheel that size they will be all scrunched up If i'm not making sense then blame the dog! She's made me stay up all bloody night and i am now cream crackered

Re: New Hamster owner
Quick fix for the barred shelves would be cardboard and cable ties.
Would also try and arrange things so they cannot fall the full height of the cage. Daft things will climb and can do themselves serious damage if they fall and land badly. |
