A Rarely Considered Bedding Option

I haven't seen a post about bedding for a while but I thought I'd put this out there as I don't think many people know of this.

Polar fleece makes amazing bedding.

It's of no use for people with burrowing animals (like myself at the moment), but it's great for mice, rats, guinea pigs etc.
It doesn't fray, so you don't have to worry about your critters feet getting caught. It's also great because it obviously has no dust, so no allergies or respiratory infections, and last but certainly not least it's machine washable and highly absorbent, in other words, reusable. I would recommend washing it once or twice a week depending on the number of rodents you have, so to make it easier on yourself have two or three pieces rather then having to wash one piece right away. For nesting I would suggest just shredding some paper.
Polar fleece is pretty easy to come by, most bedding shops sell blankets that you can hack up to fit your cage or you can buy the appropriate amount needed at fabric shops for a decent price.

Now, if you have a cage with multiple floors, and the higher up floors are just made with bars we all know this is uncomfortable for their little feet, so I would recommend buying vinyl (the fabric, not the record or movie), cutting it to the size of the floor (don't forget to leave a hole so they can move between floors), and be sure to secure it to the bars. The best way to do this is to make holes at the edge of the material, using a knife or scissors, then tying it to the bars with some cord. There's a good chance they'll chew at the cord, so be sure to check it every couple days. The nice thing about using the vinyl is that, because it's plastic it can just be wiped clean of any urine of feces at the end of the day (and I would say wipe it clean every day).

Any ways I think that's all I have to report and I hope this helps some people out.

Re: A Rarely Considered Bedding Option

I used to do fleece but my kids are too messy and they are epic chewers/burrowers (rats!) I think if fleece wasn't so expensive around here (or washing powder) then I'd probs stick to it, it does look lovely, but ecobed/aubiose is the sensible option for me.

Yeah that's exactly what my Romeo and Rondo did...I bought a big sheet of fleece from Asda for £2 and cut out a big bit and folded it in half to make it stronger...but the babies burrowed between the two halves...was very cute...though was scared they would not be able to breath! xx

Re: A Rarely Considered Bedding Option

I thought of it but decided the cons outweighed the pro's for me, thinking of rats.

As rats lovve digging! I like to scatter feed as well which you cant really do with fleece. So for me personally I felt it took away some of their enrichment. I did when the furet tower wasnt split in two use fleece on one half and shredded cardboard on the other which was a nice change for them.

Mine love hanging out in the hammocks.. when the babies killed the first hammock.. I came down to 7 rats on top of each other in a single hammack.. was a rat pile on..
