Unhappy Skinny rat help???

OK I am currently trying to transfer pics over to PC as we speak...as I speak lol.

Anyways I have just been playing with the boys and one of them....Caspar...is REALLY skinny. I haven't held him much recently as I don't like just picking them up...i like them to come to me...then I grab them mwahaha...but today I did cos I noticed...sorry lad....but he has tiny balls!! I mean he is a boy...they're just tiny compared to the others. So I picked him up and had an amazing cuddle...they don't snuggle much so I am very chuffed...but he is very skinny. In that I could feel his spine...ribs....everything!

I don't know if it is connected but he was one of the smaller ones...not smallest...but smaller ones when he was a little baby. He didn't move properly etc.

Anyways I put him in a tray of food but he wasn't interested.

Is there anything wrong do you think? Is he being pushed out? He is very active though. Am so confused!

How many others is he in with? And is he getting high protein foods in addition to normal foods?

Oh yes...lots of egg, wholemeal bread and rice, a little kitten food, veg etc. All the others are bigger.

He is in with 7 others.

Re: Skinny rat help???

Might be an idea to separate him for short periods for mealtimes once or twice a day.... If you freerange them, when you put the others back in their cage, pop him in a carrier with some of his normal dry food and some high protein stuff - eggfood/lactol, fish, good quality kitten food (like applaws), some chicken or similar etc etc.

My thinking for this is that it might be that he is missing out on the best food during mealtimes due to being in with all the others. Maybe he is less interested in food than the others and waits for a while before eating rather than diving straight for the food bowl? so if you separate him with his own food source for a little while after he has exercised and is hopefully hungry, he will have more of a chance of getting to the best of the food rather than the others eating it all and him not getting any, if that makes sense?

Of course, pop him back into the cage with his friends once he's done with eating

Re: Skinny rat help???

He doesn't look hugely skinny from the photos in the other thread, might just need some extra food on the side. Remember, at 9 weeks they will still be using a lot of energy for growing, so may need to be fed extra dry food as well as extra high protein food for them to grow.

Yeah makes perfect sense! I was thinking I may have to separate him for a while...as in permanently for a while...never thought about meal times!! Which makes much more sense. Thanks hun! xx

ps check out pics on other thread!

Re: Skinny rat help???

No worries, let me know if it works Might be an idea to get some scales and weigh him every few days just to track any major weight drops in case it is a deeper issue or some variety and he needs to go to the vets (touch wood he won't! It does just sound like he isn't getting enough food )

Would kitchen scales do? I don't think my crappy argos value weight scales would detect him? xx
