Degu Cages

It's really hard to find decent cages that don't cost an arm and a leg! I was looking at this one

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-tier-ferret-...ht_1908wt_1139

but people say it's a pain to clean, I was planning on getting it for my birthday and then putting card on the shelves until I got some tiles or some lino or something

People also say it stinks and rusts, but these people keep rats in it, would it be the same with degus? if so any suggestions on good cheap cages.

Re: Degu Cages

I know someone who kept 2 male rats in one of those cages and it did stink. Also know someone who has a chinchilla in one and its the same.....

Re: Degu Cages

What if I removed the metal shelves and replaced with wood?

Re: Degu Cages

Think aslong as the wood is coated with something non toxic that would stop it from soaking in urine that would be better

Re: Degu Cages

Horrible cage to clean. I changed the shelves from mesh to wood and its just a horrible, sharp pointy cage. Like i said, hard to clean too Door locks are horrible. I had one before the cage i have now.

I recommend looking for second hand parrot cages they are usually high enough and if you get the right kinda one then itll be perfect x

Re: Degu Cages

The cage isnt really big enough either according to the degu calculator:

Quote:
Evaluation of your cage:

Length: 68.6 cm
Width: 43.2 cm
Height: 106 cm
Base: 0.3 m2
Capacity: 0.314 m3

Your cage is too small to keep Degus in it.

Details:
The sides are not wide enough. They should be at least 50 cm long.
The base is too small. It should be at least 0,36 m2 (558 square inch), better would be 0,5 m2 or more.
The volume of the cage is too small. It should be at least 0,5 m3

Re: Degu Cages

i had one of those for a pair of chins, they are horrid cages.

the doors open inwards so toy space is VERY limited, i didnt find it too hard to clean, i just found it a nightmare to use as a cage, cleaning was the simplest thing about it, it was every other aspect i hated

Re: Degu Cages

Decide to just buy a second hand, from ebay or preloved!
