Hamster Ball Query

Hello everyone

I finally got hold of a hamster ball, not sold in Jordan unfortunately.

Now, I was told by my brother (who bought it for me from Germany) that I shouldn't put Casper in it for more than 5 minutes (this is what he was told by the girl in the pet shop). But I read online on several websites that a hammy could stay in it for no more than 30 minutes, and u see, there is a HUGE difference between 5 minutes and 30 minutes I am a bit confused here and would really appreciate ur help in confirming the time period allowed for a hammy in the ball each day.

and, is there anything else I should be wary of,, other than of course not letting him near staircases, direct sunlight, or higher surfaces...etc while in his ball?

Help please?

Re: Hamster Ball Query

No I don't let mine in longer than five mins at a time. At least let him out for a bit then maybe another five mins. Also make sure you supervise him while he is in it. And might be worth putting some selotape over the entrances cos they easily some undone. xx

Re: Hamster Ball Query

Should be fine for 15-20 minutes at a time.
Ovbiously keep an eye on them.
All hams are different, some enjoy buzzing around in a ball more than others.

I use a little PVC tape over the doors just incase.
(re-stickable and doesn't leave icky residue like normal tape !)
Some of mine have sussed how to open the doors in under a minute.

Re: Hamster Ball Query

20 minutes is fine, then you can let them back in their cage. Some hamsters love the ball and demand to go back in it! As long as you give them the option, its good

Re: Hamster Ball Query

Cinnamon doesn't particularly like her ball but if she is feeling like a run around I usually put her in for 10 minutes, let her out and give her a treat (maybe some carrot or broccoli) then put her back in for a little longer. Good luck with the ball....hopefully hammy likes it

Re: Hamster Ball Query

Mine are in about 20 mins - although I've only one that really goes in her ball now and that's not too often as she doesn't come out until the early hours of the morning, lazy sod.

Re: Hamster Ball Query

Thank you all for ur replies.

I am thinking that, from all the answers I am getting, probably a 10 minutes period sounds safe. I tried this out today, and he seemed a bit surprised. Still not sure if he's enjoying it as he wasn't moving around the whole time, but actually sitting there sniffing all sides of the ball at times

will keep on trying this over several small periods of time (5-10 mins) a day. will keep u guys updated on how he likes it,, might even throw in some photos

Re: Hamster Ball Query

Mine are in theirs for up to 20 mins at a time but you will need to build up to that and watch that your hamster doesnt look distressed.

Re: Hamster Ball Query

Casper has been doing less sniffing and more moving in his ball but I kind of worry about him bumping into furniture while moving,he does run around and the ball hits furniture around the room, however, he never hits hard as he is not that quick (kind of a lazy Syrian boy) . but, I cannot help but think: is this something I need to worry or be careful about? could it possibly be dangerous? and if it is, how can I avoid it?

I am sorry if I am asking stupid questions but I tend to worry a lot when it comes to introducing new things to my baby
