Talking Rats or Mice?

Hi Guys,

I am a complete newbie to this site so sorry if i say or do something I shouldn't I am just getting use to the whole site.

My question is I like Rats but the smell is quite strong and as I live in a small one bedroom flat the smell would be a big problem. I like mice too but was just wondering how different they are to rats? Could some one help me please..

Thanks

LadyTwinkle

Re: Rats or Mice?

i have both rats and mice, my male mice smell and hv 2 b cleaned out a lot but i hv male and female rats and they dont smell hardly at all they use a litter tray in the corner of my cages which i change everyday and clean cage out once a week sometimes every 10 days depending if its messy or not, my female rats smell better than my males but theres not a lot in it, im not sure about female mice as ive only got males. Re: Rats or Mice?

I have owned both and I have found that mice smell worse than rats, I found that male rats smelled worse than my females but the cage was cleaned properly once a week with a very strong but non deadly cleaner and It stopped the smell, also i wouldn't recommend having wood in their cage as the urine soaks in an makes the smell worse.
I miss my rats xx

I found my mice didn't like to interact as much as my rats plus the smell of my mice got a bit to much for my mum as i had them all when i was a lot younger, i'd have some rats now but i think my o/h would leave

Re: Rats or Mice?

i always recommend rats as i find they are much more interesting and interact with you alot more. I currently have 10! the girls DO smell better than the boys, although i'm planning on litter training them shortly. I would also not recommend wood in the cage. Not just because of the smell but we've had shavings before and it had lice in it!!!
we currently use a paper pellet bedding called bio-catolet..it doesn't smell and its easy to clean, and once the rats are litter tray trained, completely recyclable! even put it in your compost bin!

Re: Rats or Mice?

I have both male and female mice and rats.

Mice tend to smell a little bit more.

Really depends want you want, have the money to care for including vets and stuff.

Do you want something that you can handle and hold or do you want a mini dog because thats all they are really just mini dogs very smart little devils mine are always escaping.
