Does your vet understand rodents?

Was just wondering what sort of vet you take your rodents to and whether you felt confident they know what they are talking about?

I'm lucky that I have a car and there is a large vet surgery about 40 minutes away that has an exotic vet on its staff and 24 hour emergency vet cover. My family and friends though can't understand why I don't just go to the vets in the village, 5 minutes away from my house.

I'm sure all vets would look at my hamsters, but I worry they might not all know enough about them or prescribe the right dose of medicine, especially if they are more used to dealing with cats and dogs.

Mine always managed to catch and fully examine my rodents with care, even when they are scared and in pain and trying to bite. He can tell what type some lumps are and give options (rather than just saying it's a tumour, he's a bit more specific) and I was very impressed he could clean and examine Sandy's eyeball for damage yesterday when it was so swollen and gunky. When it looked like Noël might need intestinal surgery I joked that at least he was a syrian and the vet might be able to see to stitch his intestines, the vet told me he'd do the same operation for a robo too (hope he's got a good magnifying glass, lol) He's doesn't just do hamsters, but he does all rodents, avian, repiles, amphibians, arachnids and fish.

In other areas of the country it seems though like some members struggle to find a vet that can diagnose, prescibe and operate on their small rodent.

Re: Does your vet understand rodents?

I know I find it amaxing that vets are not specialised in all domestic animals...even common ones like hamsters mice rats etc. My local vets didn't hold my mice even. Diagnosed lumps as cancer without much examination and refused treatment except pts. I then found an exotics vet about 40 mins away from me...though i don't drive...but my dad has taken me once and i bused it once. She handled both the hamsters in question...held them close to her chest, calmed them down if they needed it, diagnosed specific infections, treated it and even said they would operate on Harry's tumour!

Then I have another vet about half hour away that was open one sunday for emergency appt but didn't cost me any more...for rabbits. He was brill and explained everything!!! xx

Re: Does your vet understand rodents?

Only ever been to our vets with bunnies and they seem to be good

We took nelson only a couple of weeks ago (he has mites)

The vet was very nice and seemed to know what she was talking about and she give nelson a nice pack of hay to take home
