Sandy's ill again

Went up to her cage and she didn't pop out to see me like normal. Found her all curled up in her nest shaking. She looked like she'd scratched one of her eyes out , all you could see was a thin swollen red line. She tried to wash herself and ended up screaming in pain She's had a red eye a month ago, but it had cleared up by the Monday when I was going to take her to the vets and she's been fine since.

Luckily she got an afternoon appointment with the rodent vet. He managed to work the eye open, put dye in it and use a light to check it over. Luckily the eyeball itself seems to be fine, it's just so swollen and gunky around it.

She's on eyedrops three times a day for a week. Anyone want to volunteer to come and try an hold down a poorly hamster, work open a swollen shut eye and manage to apply the eyedrops for me?

She's definately not a happy hamster, she's just keeps herself curled up in the corner of her cage

Re: Sandy's ill again

She's just woken up and moved a tiny bit, so she got her first dose of eye drops.

She was a star, let me hold her, bath her eye with warm water. Then gently open her eye. Then she allowed me to lay her down on her side to put the drops in. She was squeaking a bit as she's really not a happy hamster at the moment, but didn't try to bite at all. She then had a brief cuddle in my arms until I thought the drops might have had chance to soak in enough not to be wiped straight off on her bedding .

I'm hoping I've got a few spare drops though. Because as patient as she was, I've also medicated her cage (mopped up) and the dining room table

I was so glad that I noticed at 7.55am and could phone as soon as the vets opened. Also extremely glad the rodent vet was in today. I would have taken her to one of the other vets in the practise if not, but I feel confident he knows what he's talking about with hamsters. He's aways so good and gentle at examining them. Sandy was in so much pain and he could still gently open her eye and knew how test it without stressing her too much.
