Exclamation hamster advice needed please

I have noticed that Tick Tick, my long haired hamster seems to have patches where his fur is shorter especially on his neck which looks very pink where you can see his skin showing through. I thought it might have been caused by his fur rubbing on his wheel, he did have a wire one but I have changed it now just in case. Could he be pulling his fur out himself by over grooming?

Re: hamster advice needed please

I didn't wanna read and run...though I have no idea! Are long haired hamsters prone to molting(SP!)? How long has he had the problem? Does the skin look sore? xx

I just noticed it the other day so I changed his wheel and in fact I have changed his cage too, I have put him in Marleys old cage as he has been upgraded (look out for my photos) It does look a bit sore but it is in quite an awkward place to see properly as his keeps wriggling when I try to have a look

You need a Dini who will just sit still in your hands

Awww bless him! Might be overgrooming...obviously the worry is a skin condition...though didn't know hamsters were prone to them! xx

Re: hamster advice needed please

Just been looking it up...if it is on the back of the neck...ie a hard place to reach...it could be mites...have you looked into that possibility? Also apparently they do go through seasonal hairloss...apparently! Or old age...though he is from Dini's litter right...so thats not a possibility. Could be an allergy...has beeding/diet changed?

Sorry for questions! xx

Re: hamster advice needed please

Does he have peanuts in his food? A surprisingly large number of rodents are allergic to peanuts, have you got a pic of the hair loss that you could post?

Yes he is from Dinis litter but he was the runt so I don't know if that makes a difference. Its not on the back of his neck just underneath might be the peanuts like the dogsmother said.

Thanks for the advice, that sounds awful I really hope he hasn't got that!! They do say that it is unusual for hamsters under 1 year old to get it and Tick Tick is only 8 months but I will keep a close eye on him and I will defo look into getting some of that tea tree skin cream they advise as it might help anyway.
