Dwarf hamsters...

Right, I just wanted to ask a question, I'm more of a Syrian kind of guy as they're big bulkie and so very friendly. But I remember when I got my third hamster, it was quite small tbh and at first I thought it was a dwarf (I got it off a friend) but he claimed it not a dwarf and in fact a Syrian, it escaped twice through the cage bars even though they were so thin, I had to buy a whole new cage which was so annoying.. anyway I remember my cousins getting 3, a couple and then one on it's own, they were so HORRIBLE, vicious, fast and darn right annoying, they would like SQUEAK at you as well which was weird.

Just wanted to ask are they all like this? Is it in their nature?

Re: Dwarf hamsters...

Yeah Syrians are certainly generally easier hamsters! And the two I adopted when they awere older were simply unhandleable...just hated it and I didn't like stressing them out so i didn't handle them. But I took in a mum and some baby boys and the boys particularly are lovely...none bite and now they are older they are usually happy to some and say hi...one even jumps on my hand...almost looks huffy if i don't let him In fact the only bite I have ever received from a hamster was a syrian...but i poked my finger into her house...so unsurprising

Re: Dwarf hamsters...

Not all dwarf hamsters are vicious, vocal, etc although some can be unfortunately.

It is best to buy dwarf hamsters direct from a breeder, where you can see mum and dad to ascertain their temperaments. If mum and dad are nice natured there is a good chance their babies will be too as temperament is hereditry.

Re: Dwarf hamsters...

I have a syrian, 2 winter whites and a roborovski and they all have good tempraments. I would say my winter whites are the most laid back and love to snuggle, i havent had them that long but they have never tried to bite me.

My robo is very quick but she is friendly and my syrian is so laid back he is practically horizontal although he does tester bites with new people but it doesnt hurt it feels as if he is licking but he is used to getting fed treats out of the cage which might be why

Re: Dwarf hamsters...

My dwarf (Spike) and her daughters were amazing little girls, they never bit or even tried to bite, they werent vocal either. I have 4 Syrians at the moment and they are lovely too though.

Re: Dwarf hamsters...

My dwarfie is very friendly

I've never had syrians before so I can't really compare them but rocky and rambo were both very very friendly

They are more active than syrians i think and amazing escape artists (rocky has been in(yes in) the wall for a week before -.-)

but great pets

Re: Dwarf hamsters...

Iv actually had the opposite experience. Before my current syrian I had 2 dwarf brothers, one was so affectionate and would jump into your hand and love being handled, the other was slightly cage aggressive and would nip you if you put your hand into the cage when he was in a bad mood but outside the cage he was also a little angel. As for dora my syrian, well currently nursing another bite on my hand from when she decided enough was enough.

If (when ) I get more hamsters I think I will get some more dwarfs, that is unless I can find a good syrian breeder or a friendly rescue but the chances of that are slim here (Ireland).
