Angry Finally

managed to tame Shilo so I thought now would be a good time to check the sex, and it turns out She is a He!
Now I'm unsure as to what I'm going to do, as I've fallen in love with him, but the plan was to breed my hamsters again. I don't really have room for another hamster, and knowing my luck I'd get another male.

Re: Finally

If you don't have room for another hamster, how are you going to have room for the babies

You'd need at least another 2 cages, one for the female babies and one for the male babies. And if you didn't sell/give them all away then you'd end up with a cage for each unwanted hamster.

Do you know the background of the hamster you want to breed, if you didn't even know the sex? Are both hamsters of the right temperament? Do either of them carry the white-bellied gene? Do you know if their parents lived long healthy lives?

Re: Finally

That was my first thought too - why breed when there are so many hamsters in the country already that need homes, why add to the problem. I would just keep the hamster you have got already and enjoy him if it was me, he sounds lovely.

I don't have room for another long term resident.
We have plenty of spare cages and homes have already been found for all of the babies in advance of breeding them.
I know the background of the hamsters and yes they are of a good temperament. I have bred off one of them previously.

Noo, I would never give him up, I meant I'm not sure whether to get a female and still breed them because I would feel bad for letting down everyone that the babies would have gone to.

Re: Finally

I suggest before you decided to breed that you contact a reputable breeder. If the person you got Shilo from couldnt even sex him properly then perhaps not a very good breeder. Sure Shilo didnt come from a pet shop?

What are your breeding aims?

I am sure people would understand I don't think they will have trouble finding a hamster elsewhere but on the other hand how much more room would one hammy take up I bred my hamsters Phoebe and Marley earlier this year and I loved the experience so if you have homes lined up for the babies then go for it
