what to do....

well iv been looking into getting some rats now for a good 6 months + and the other day a wonderful freecycle lady gave me a jenny rat cage with all tunnels/levels. So now would be the perfect time to get looking!

So i started my search and found a local rescue she only has 2 year old female rats for rehoming and nothing else what so ever. Then i found a lady near to me who has a litter of baby dumbos only 10 days old. I can have pick of the litter.

I dont know if to help a rescue in need or wait for some tiny babies ready in 5 weeks?

HELP PLEASE!!

Re: what to do....

Personally I would go for the rescues every time
Babies are cute but will have no problems finding a new home

Re: what to do....

I dont know. It is up to you and your personal preference. I would go for the rescues myself because they deserve a second chance but none of us (that I know of) will think badly of you either way. xxx

Re: what to do....

thats what iv been thinking too..... They've been in rescue for a while. The only thing thats putting me off is the fact that she keeps them in a shed. Is this ok for them?

Is a jenny cage ok for 2 full grown rats, it says on the ratty calculator upto 5 but im pretty sure thats wrong!

Re: what to do....

A Jenny cage would be fine for 2 ratties
Have you tried Anna T on here, she's got 2 4 month old boys called Mac & Cheese needing homes in Surrey
Mac and Cheese - 2xmale rats, 4 months - SURREY
If you're willing to wait a couple of months I may well have some babies to go to good homes as I currently have 3 rescue does here, at least one of which is due very soon!

Re: what to do....

I've got four girls living in a Jenny with tons of space! You have to make up for the wasted space with extra shelves, hammocks and other hanging things they can crawl on, it all creates extra floorspace, it should be more than enough for 2 girls!

Re: what to do....

I would personally have the babies, basically because rats have such short lifespans that I want to have any much time with them as I can. However, if I had other rats of my own, and could take in older rats, then I would as it's nice to give them a loving home for their final days. basically, it's up to you and what you think.

I have a cage with the same dimensions as the jenny cage, and I have 3 adult bucks in it very comfortably. I will allow a maximum of 4 adult bucks in it.
