Suggestions for a good hamster cage please!

we've decided to add to our furry family a couple of russian dwarf hamsters but im having trouble deciding what cage would be best for them. I want something spacious with multiple floors with tubes/ladders. Something thats easy to clean and doesnt take too long to do so and escape proof. I quite like the idea of being able to extend the cage somehow later on to add interest. Can anyone think of cage that sounds like this that might be ideal?

Have you thought about making your own bin cages?
They are quite cheap and you can to them as and when you want

Hamster Bin Cages

Hope that link helps

Re: Suggestions for a good hamster cage please!

For more than one hamster, lots of floors and extensions is not a good idea, different levels and floors, and tubes can increase the risk of fighting, you will need to get a cage with a large footprint, no seperate levels and one of any resourse (wheels, houses etc) per animal. I would reccomend a decent sized bin cage too, the furplast Mary is a great cage but for babies the bar spacing might be an issue. If you are wanting just one dwarf though the imac fantasy would fill all your 'wants' list although you might have to make sure they can manage the tubes ok.

Re: Suggestions for a good hamster cage please!

crittertrails are good although they have verticle tubing so you may need to rearrange it or make a ladder for them.
I know a lot of people may have a dig at me but my dwarfs were happy in a rotastak but for them you need a lot of time to clean it. It's also quite hard to reach them at certain points which i think is what they like

Re: Suggestions for a good hamster cage please!

as TDM said - more than one dwarf and there will be fighting over different levels!

ri started in a crittertrail when we had to split her ans stitch up and she managed the tubes ok.

Re: Suggestions for a good hamster cage please!

Hi thanks for your replies. I was unaware that they would fight with a layered cage. I dont mind having just one hammy but what ive read is that they prefer company of another one and would be much happier which is why i thought about getting two.
Ive only ever had syrians before but wanted a different breed this time. Ill have a look at the cages that have been suggested but i dont want a rotastak as ive heard too many bad things about them with hamsters escaping and takes some time to clean out. ive got other small pets that need cleaning out weekly too which is why i dont want something that will take along time to clean.

i had 2 russians (Rilo and Stitch) and they were in a mini duna (which they actually needed a big cage anyway, i realise that now...) and we ended up having to separate them. they ended up being put in crittertrail cages (and were able to climb the tubes and everything) but i found the crittertrail quite flimsy and the cages broke. At chrsistmas when i came home i ordered a second hand rotastak for rilo to go in (sticth got rehomes as i was at uni and couldnt fit three cages in my room and i had a syrian as well) but that never arrived so she went in a zoozone equivalent with mesh n the top. I think if you alter a zoozone - tie mesh on the top - you should have plenty of room for 2 dwarves.

Anyway, ri ended up in thet for a while until the rotastak arrived and then she went in that, but i had to have it all on the one level for her because she couldnt manage the tubes and couldnt use the ladders

anyway, now shes in a rody cage and loves it. its smaller than the zoozone but not as fiddly for me with the rotastak. its not the biggest cage out there though.

Yeah I bought a pre-done meshed up zoozone from TDM and it is fantastic...houses my three dwarf boys fine! And (TOUCH WOOD) there has been no serious fighting yet! Btw I mean the large zoozone...the 40"+ one! xx

Re: Suggestions for a good hamster cage please!

After looking at the different cages that have been suggested, the imac fantasy is the type of cage i was looking for (not keen on the colours though). The bin cages look great and although they look simple to make you can be sure id probably mess it up somehow and end up with an escaped hamster. I saw some reviews of the imac fantasy and many people had said that they were great for a syrian but not so good for the dwarfs esp the robo as they may be able to get through the bars. Im really not too sure now what i want. cage and hamster wise. The furplast Mary looks a fab cage but im not sure i could fit it anywhere so needs something to go upwards like the imac.
