Re: are Syrian Hamster usually...

How long have you had her? Have you tried rewarding her whenever she comes near you then gradually working up to when she takes treat from your hand, then when she puts her front paws on your hand, then when she sits on your hand then when she lets you lift your hand when she is sat on it. It will gradually build trust and friendship. It will take time, patience and a lot of effort but it will be worth it. xxxxx

Re: are Syrian Hamster usually...

Most Syrians are tameable, and once tame they are fantastic pets, I have 3 lovely syrians and they are holdable and sweet natured and generally easy pets to own........ then there is Darla, now Darla will actively attack the bars when she sees people walk past, she is adorable looking and its so tempting to try to stroke her and have a cuddle but omg I wouldnt reccomend it if you want to keep all your fingers. Shes still a fun pet to own and I really admire her spirit though and I wouldnt swap her for a tame hamster, she certainly isnt boring thats for sure.

Re: are Syrian Hamster usually...

Sometimes they dont like being grabbed or held.. Best thing to do is allow hammy to run around you in a safe area where you can re catch her.. then she can sniff and climb you as she pleases.. once she gets used to you I am pretty sure she will be much easier to tame....

LOL And the chin ups are nothing.. My Princess Neeco and Fred are secret escapist.. and if you looking its like suddenly they are doing something else.. LMAO

Re: are Syrian Hamster usually...

How long have you had her?

I find they mellow in time. Some of them I can pick up straight away, a couple of mine I had to leave several weeks to settle in and now they'll come out. Sunshine still is not finger safe after about 6 months. You can pick her up and play with her, but you have to let her run over your body as she likes to bite fingers.

Sandy is usually one of the calmest, friendliest hamsters once she is out of her cage. However, you take your fingers in her own hands if you attempt to put them anywhere near or in her cage.

Re: are Syrian Hamster usually...

hi everyone, thanks for the replies.

I've had Onions for 3 months now. She's not really showing any signs of chilling out so maybe i am stuck with a mean hamster!

I have tried handfeeding her treats and such and she does take them but she wont let me handle her. I have to change her bedding later and i'll have to wear gardening gloves to handle her or she'll bite me!

Perhaps I should have bought fancy instead! I only chose Onions because she had just been left alone in her cage in the shop, as a girl had bought the other one. If there had been more hamsters to choose from i may have gone for a less....violent one!

Re: are Syrian Hamster usually...

how have you been trying to tame her?

Hamster are all different in which ways are best to tame and on how long it takes to tame them.

Girls dont like to be held as much unlike boys! Girls pref to run around.

Both my girls are recuse ham's becasue they were biting but they were only doing this as they were scared! they are now lovely little things who would dream about biting now!

If you want some tips on how to tame her im happy to help

Re: are Syrian Hamster usually...

Some are my first one was horrible, but my last two have been amazing.

Have you tried offering it some food by hand or talking to it. With my hold hamster i used to click my tongue to let him know i was there and wasn't a threat and with my new one i use the kissie noise.
If they freeze when i'm in the room i just make the noise and they settle. It's just teaching them that you're not gonna hurt them

ps. i've never had a female as they are know for being more tempramental x

Re: are Syrian Hamster usually...

She sounds like my dora (Aggressive syrian). I gave up on trying to turn her into a cuddly hamster and now just handle her when necessary and let her run around the bath instead of me, she seems much happier and I haven't been bitten since the summer.
I never knew females can be more tempermental than males. Might explain why all my smallies have been so placid and tame up until now.
