Unhappy I am never owning rats again!

I love my rats to bits and think the world of them. I always try to do the best for them and find myself asking questions constantly on forums. Lately it seems I havnt had a week go by that I havnt been to the vets with a rat and it has became very aparent that none of my local vets are very rat savvy. I wish I had known that before I decided to get rats. After my current lot are gone I will not be owning rats again as I feel I would only be letting them down.

Ahhh babe don't be so hard on yourself........ you have'nt let them down at all

Maybe you could google and have a look around... further a field if needs be next time just to make sure, i always find that PAH vets are good with rats as they sell them in house... i am sure some will disagree with me but if you have one local go in and ask

hope they all pick up son if there has been lots of vets visits..... lots of cuddles and kisses

Oh hun! I don't know what to say! You make great points I know...but rats are so lovely! And rats are generally healthy...you have been really unlucky I think! But obv the rat vet point is something I can't argue with!

Hugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: I am never owning rats again!

oh that's so sad

it's a shame most vets aren't more rodent savvy, they are such popular, common pets that you'd think they would know a little more about them! They seem to think that rodents aren't as important as cats and dogs and don't need treating... i understand it's hard to give medication to a rodent and it's hard to operate on them but the same value doesn't seem to be put on their lives.

Sadly very true.

If I cant offer the full care to my rats then I shouldnt have them.

Re: I am never owning rats again!

I've owned 2 rats..Not got any now but I loved them so much they were more like little Dogs than Rodents very clever and loving.

So sorry you've had a bad time I'm sure it's not something that you are doing you are prob just having a run of bad luck..Hopefully things will get better with them..

easiest way to get around this is to become the expert yourself and TELL the vet what needs to be done.

there are loads of sites and books you can read to get the info/knowledge you need, most pet owners are the 'experts' as they know their pets better than the vet will, the vets only know diseases and problems specific to the types of animals.

just cos you're not a qualified vet doesn't mean you don't know what you're talking about.

Re: I am never owning rats again!

Most vets dont seem to know much beyond dogs and cats, even then some appear to have slept their way through vet school!!
I know how you feel I said I wasnt getting any more after my last boy died and here I am with 4 new girls!! My last lot of girls were all mum and sisters and all developed mammary tumors at the same time.
