Smelly

My hamster has really begun to smell for the past few weeks.
I mean he's completely fine but his cage stinks worse than usual.
No abnormal poo, nothing.
He's about 2 years old now, a Syrian.
Is it just old age? My brother says he's rotting on the inside and we should "end his suffering" but I'm not so sure. If he was rotting inside would he still be climbing all over his cage and pooping perfectly oval, healthy poops?

Re: Smelly

I think your brother is just being horrible! lol

It might well be the cage - if it's a wire cage, have you scrubbed the bars and really given the base a good scrubbing? This happened years ago when I had a mouse. Her cage really stunk....like I could clean it out in the morning and by teatime it stunk my room out again, but it turned out that the bars had pee ingrained into them and just needed a really good scrub. Being about 13 years old, it didn't occur to me to scrub the bars very often. Also, do you clean all the toys and accessories in the cage? Sometimes if a toy or the house or the wheel has pee on it, it can stink everything out.

Re: Smelly

What have you been feeding it? Mine love asparagus, but stink the house out afterwards.

Just the normal hamster dried food like nuts. And occasionally a carrot or apple but that's about it.

Re: Smelly

Yeah was thinking about this earlier. This is no criticism...but do you check if hammy has eaten the carrot/apple etc...cos even left in a day or too uneaten will cause a smell...as well as a poorly tummy if they try to eat it then! xx

Oh no no no, I take out the fresh fruit the day I put it in so he doesn't eat rotten foods.
