Gerbil intros

Well I removed the mesh from Homer and Barts cage yesterday, Ive had them in a split tank for a few weeks and have been swapping them over to each others side a couple of times a day and I decided it was time to take the plunge and put them together. I was pooing myself but I had my gloves on and a spare cage ready for when world war 3 broke out and they went for each others throats, and as I lifted the mesh they went for each other and............

They snuggled

aww well done!! I'd love to introduce Jill to my two girls but I don't have the confidence

also with them all being female and adults and the two girls already a bonded pair (sisters), I just don't think it will work.

they look so cute together.... I bet it was the biggest relief in the world when they were happy with one another

Tommorrow Im collecting two baby girls that someone is giving away and Im going to start introing them to Marge, now Im very scared about doing it but shes always had the company of Homer until I seperated them and she is definately lonely so I have to try, keep everything crossed for me that it goes as smoothly as it has with the boys wont you.

Re: Gerbil intros

Hi, i've had some success introducing females, as well as failures of course! Males are so much easier, I've never had a male split fail, especially between an adult and pups but also adult males. You've still done very very well with Homer and Bart as it is so nerve-wracking a process! Well done.

I find females need a little longer, my successful pairings have had between 3 weeks to 3 months in a splitcage, though most were only weeks. I just get a little cautious between females as they do seem to go for each other that much nastier. I've only ever introduced 1 young female pup at a time to 1 adult female. I tried putting a mother back with her 2 12 week old daughters which worked for a whie but they then declanned, after a year, she rejected them.

To the person mentioning wanting to introduce gerbill Jill, you're right, I expect the adult sisters will see her as nothing but a threat and try to kill her. Almost guaranteed I'm afraid. However, you could probably introduce her to one young female of 8 to 12 weeks - if there are breeders near you!

To the person wanting to introduce two young pups to an older female, a I said, I haven't managed that but I have known other keepers manage maybe once or twice. The fact that the adult has bred and is freshly alone will help as she probably is lonely as you say. I have found females aren't as obvious about their acceptance through the bars, except perhaps by their lack of attack! This makes it neccessary for extra caution but you can't split up the babies so it's obviously worth a go. Just make sure not to give them food bowls or a house or more things to scentmark and get defensive over.

Good luck!

Hopefully she will accept them if they're only babies! Gotta admit that I don't know all that much about introducing gerbils cos i've never done it but I do know that intros work better when at least one of them is young and that's the problem I have - mine are all adults.

Aww glad the intro went well.

I need to find a wee pal for Josey but I am soo scared about intros. I have done loads of rat intros but have heard gerbils are a lot harder.
