Hay Question for hammies

Can you use hay as a bedding/foraging material for hamsters ???

Re: Hay Question for hammies

It's not unheard of.
Personally I wouldn't use hay with hamsters, due to them pouching their stuff.
Always the risk of them scratching/damaging the inside of their pouch with any sharp poke-y bits in it.

He has the forest floor stuff and that has twigs and bits in it too but is recommended for hamsters. I was wondering more about allergies i suppose. I just like to give him different materials to keep his cage more interesting and bought some chamomile hay but then wondered if it was ok.

I use a mix of the forest floor stuff which has twigs, leaves and extra little bits in and normal woodshavings from p@h. It's made by a brand called Woodlands who sell loads of stuff in there.

Re: Hay Question for hammies

If you want too, just pop it into the freezer first, in case it has any parasites, and you'll have to change it much more often, as hay molds fast Do you have aspen shavings, or aubiose, or megazorb around you?? Aubios is a horse bedding, made of hemp, I believe, and you get a huge bag of it, and it works really well, and megazorb is also a horse bedding, and it's basically carefresh, but in smaller, softer, fluffier pieces and this also comes in large bags As for aspen, you can usually find a big bag some places, but the others would be cheaper
