Help

Hey,
My hamster has just turned 2, she lived with me for a y then my friend for a yr and has now returned home! She has been back 2 weeks but i've noticed tonight she is getting bald patched around her bottom? Is this anything to worry about should I take her to the vets? She seems very happy she wasnt handled for a yr (not happy with that!) But she has let me handle her shes loving her ball etc so she doesnt seem stressed?

cavy_gal is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Help

Is it just bald as in, hair has either been pulled or fallen out, or is there any reddness to the patches? A picture would be handy also.

Re: Help

2 is very old for a hamster

2 of the main resons of hair loss

1. mites
2. old age

most likely this is an effect of old age
old age effects kick in on hamsters often very quickly
the normaly deteroiate very quickly and more signs will soon follow
ie hamster becoming less active
storing of food
odd behavior
falling off bars whilst climbing cage
not coming out of bedding
not eating or over eating
not drinking or over drinking
just sitting still and not moving much

you can also have it tested for mites which cause hairloss
there is treatment for them but dont use pet store alternatives as they dont work

but this same thing happend to some of the hamsters i had
i think its the effects of old age setting in
