Question Teeny tiny syrian....

Today i adopted a little syrian hamster, Im not joking when i say she is tiny, she is the same size as a chinese dwarf hamster. She was one of 4 syrains of the litter but she was the only survivor, they all had a condition called retard growth syndrome (RGS). i have tried to

look it up but i can find no information on it, i have never seen such a tiny syrian.

What caused her to be so tiny??

How rare is the condition??

How easy is it for her to live a normal life??

xxxxconfused:

Re: Teeny tiny syrian....

never heard of it.
I guess its something in the genes of mum and dad??

Just treat her and love her - with a tiny bit more tlc - as you would with a normal hammy I guess

xx

Re: Teeny tiny syrian....

Funny you should bring this up. I came across a gerbil recently with the same sort of thing. It was the one survivor of the litter, but it was the size of a 2-week-old at 7 weeks - though it wasn't underdeveloped, just tiny.

I guess it's just a form of dwarfism? I dunno tho, it's very strange.

Just keep an eye on the hammy. Be really careful with it and don't drop it or anything, and make sure it can't get through the bars of its cage. Maybe put it in a tank instead. If anything goes wrong as it gets older, seek veterinary advice. Otherwise, there isn't really much you can do, except enjoy your pet's uniqueness!

i dont mean to be harsh, but you bought a hamster the same day as another hamster died??? are you allowing enough time to grieve?

where did you buy her from? theres no such thing as retard growth syndrome. She's more than likely inbred, i've seen cases of it before. As long as she is given a nutritional diet and plenty of love, she should lead a normal life. But i would urge that you report the pet shop that you got her from.
