Question Help with Escaping Hammy

We have a syrian hamster named Pagan, who is technically my 8 yr old daughter's pet but you know who ends up doing most of the work! After escaping and chewing her way through plastic and wire cages, we put her in a glass amphibian cage with a wire cover. This seemed to solve the problem....until she climbed on top of her hammy house and started gnawing at the wire at the top of the cage. So, we removed the house and started putting in tubes and cylinders that she could use to take cover in. But it didn't last. She climbed up her free standing exercise wheel and succeeded in chewing through the wire top. Fortuantely we found her, but now we have a problem. She needs a wheel for exercise, but what's to stop her from climbing and chewing her way out again? Right now we only put the wheel in sporadically while we are in the room so we can supervise her and we use her ball a lot more often to up her exercise. But this can't last on a permanent basis. Any suggestions? I found a vertical exercise wheel that I thought I'd try, but maybe a different kind of cover as well? Whatever we get, it has to have ventilation.

Re: Help with Escaping Hammy

Oh yes she needs a wheel. All hamsters need wheels! Gnawing is most likely out of boredom. Make sure there are plenty of toys too and things to gnaw on. And a secure ball for outside exercise. If you have a bath/secure room might be good to let her run out free too!

The wheel needs to be an 8inch one...silent spinners are good as they are well silent But the savic ones are quiet too.

I have one of mine in a Leon cage.

Large Leon 3 Storey Cage - Hamster Gerbil Fun Pet Home on eBay (end time 04-Sep-10 19:52:19 BST)

The bar spacing is too narrow for bar gnawing mostly!

Anyways good luck!! xx
