Question Advice sought on Hamster please

I've took in a hamster left in a house by a neighbour. She's in a 12inch cage with no wheel. I don't know what type she is.She's a gold colour with white belly and legs.Any advice (ie.type of cage to get her), would be appreciated.

Re: Advice sought on Hamster please

As far as identifying it I think a picture is needed there! hamsters are fine in a fairly small shoe box size, "hamster cage" or and these are great, you can get "hamster city" which is a network of interconnected tubes and living areas, its all down to what you can afford and what you`d like to get really. Hope that helps, Ryan....

Re: Advice sought on Hamster please

I wouldnt recommend the plastic cages with the tubing, if the hamster turns out to be an avid gnawer it could chew through the tunnels. I use metal cages, and always have a wheel, saying that not all the hamsters I've had have used them.
As for the type I'd guess at a syrian hamster, lots of these are a golden colour, and theyre very common in pet shops. It might also be a roborovski hamster, but like searyan said, a picture would be helpful and the easiest way to indentify the breed

Re: Advice sought on Hamster please

Yeah I had a lovely little hamster, spoilt her rotten, got her a rotastak cage, spent tonnes building it up and making it all nice for her, then the bugger chewed right through one of the connectors, escaped, somehow got into the neighbours house and I got her back 3 weeks later in a jam jar covered in dust.
Then again I doubt any other hamster would go through the effort of chewing through skirting board to tunnel into a neighbours house

lol I know, and I had the cheek to moan about the neighbours screaming at all hours, turns out it was my lovely hammy running across their carpet. They though they had a mice infestation hehe
funnily enough she never bit me.

hahahahahaha @ the escaping hammy!!!! AHAHAHA

From pets at home - look for a silent spinner - doesn't squeak - you have a peaceful nights sleep.

Sounds like a syrian from the colour...hide treats and give it tubes and by a ball for it to roll around in then its getting exercise.

At least if you think the cage is to small for it to be entertaining itself it has a ball to run around the room in

Cool Re: Advice sought on Hamster please

Its deffo sound like a syrian.

Dont get a poxy rotastak cage there rubbish.

Try and look in a local pet store for a cage , they are usually cheaper and much bigger than big pet stores like Pets @ home.

preferably a wire top and plastic base cage, as a plastic cage can over-heat in the summer and could make you hammie to have a heat stroke

if she is a syrian i would suggest a 8 inch wheel as a

smaller one could break her/his back.

good luckxxxx

Re: Advice sought on Hamster please

Try to avoid Rotastak cages and/or ones that have tubes, many of the tubes are far too small for a syrian to live in comfortably. The RSPCA recommends these:

Savic Cambridge 62 X 36 X 43cm Navy (these are pricey in the shops, but a very good size for a syrain)

Small Animals - Cages - Savic Hamster Heaven Metro Extra Delux Pet Hamster Cage - Pet supplies store and pet health advice - Ardent Pets - Savic Hamster Heaven Metro Extra Delux Pet Hamster Cage (again pricey, but worth it).

I have a huge cage, the Gabber Rex, which very sadly, has been discontinued. If you don't want to pay these pricey, check out ebay, you can always find good bargains.

Also...here's a great hamster specific forum...if you need any more information about your hammy...
