Re: hamster

How are you going about it? She needs to feel secure - imagine how you would feel if suddenly your legs were yanked off the floor!! Put your hand right round her so she feels safe, and maybe to start off with just very quickly transfer her to your other, ready, hand so that her feet are once more safely on 'terra firma'. Once she knows she is safe, she will be easier to handle. Good luck!

Re: hamster

When you say she wont let you pick her up, what exactly is she doing to let you know this? Is she nipping you when you try to pick her up? Does she struggle and run away? Or when you pick her up does she just squeeze out of your hands?

Like the person above said, you need to take it slowly with hamsters, you need to let her know you're safe and that getting picked up is fun and a time to enjoy. Maybe pick her up and quickly put her in your lap, so she can have a wander on your lap and try and pick her up in your hand/s from a low height, so that she can't fall from a big height.

Try holding the palm of your hand flat in her cage and see if she climbs on etc.

I have had many hamsters and they all loved to be picked up and handled, apart from 2! They were both females and would just squeeze and wiggle out of my hands everytime I picked them up. I don't know how they managed to squeeze their bodies out of my hand, but they did! It wasn't safe to pick them up because they could fall and seriously hurt themselves. In the end I just accepted that they didn't like being picked up and instead just used to make do with hand feeding them and stroking them.

Personally I do tend to find that male hamsters are more "friendly" and sociable than the females.
