Unhappy Gerbils Fighting?

So I have two male gerbils that I've had for a year and seven months. Today I noticed that Mario's mouth looks a little different than normal but I couldn't really figure out what, than I noticed that some of his whiskers looked like they'd been bitten off at. I'm unable to find anything relating to whisker biting and was hoping someone could tell me if this is a sign that they're be fighting soon or if it's just something to ignore. Please help.

Re: Gerbils Fighting?

Not sure about gerbils but in mice there is a behaviour called barbering which is a dominance thing where they over groom the less dominant animal, could it be that?

Re: Gerbils Fighting?

I thought about that. I've owned mice in the past who've had this behavior, I'm just concerned because gerbils are very aggressive when they take a disliking to eachother, and I'm worried it will lead to something serious.
