Farewell George....

I've spent my day with my mum, who sadly had to have her cat George pts this morning.

She took him to the vet to be checked as he wasn't eating properly, his wasn't looking after himself as well as he usually did and was losing weight rapidly. The vet felt masses in his abdomen, told her they could explore it in surgery but they couldn't guarantee it would solve his problem. She sadly agreed to his being euthanised to stop his pain and suffering. The light had gone out of his eyes in recent days, he was obviously not a happy cat.

He's been a friend to my mam since my dad died 11 years ago, they got him about 3 years before my dad died, along with his brother Wilf who sadly died before my dad. George was very personable and close to my mam, virtually talked to her and loved her lots as she did him.

It's broken my heart to see her so sad, I don't know what to say to her. Helped her choose his casket from the crematorium so she'd have a fitting memorial of him. That's about all I could do. She held him as he passed and she'll never forget him.

Over the bridge George, go find my dad and give him all the love for us.....

Re: Farewell George....

Thank you folks. She found it hard to go home and go in without him being there, but yes, she'll get used to it. I think she'd have managed better if it hadn't happened so quickly. Kind of didn't give her room to breathe, but she'd have made the same choice for him, she wouldn't have him in pain.

He's with my dad now, they can keep each other company til later......

Re: Farewell George....

So sorry for your loss. Please pass on my condolances to your Mum.
It is heart breaking and it will take time.
Getting another little companion might help your Mum, when the time is right.
It helped me but I know everyone is different and you also need time to grieve.

R.I.P George and have fun at Rainbow Bridge xx

Re: Farewell George....

RIP George.

That is such a sad story. I am sure your mum really appreciated having you there with her. She did the right thing, as you say, and was very brave to stay with him. I always regret not staying with mine in his final minutes - I just couldn't face it, and it still upsets me now, and it was a year ago last Friday.

I am sure your mum has some wonderful memories to help her over the grief, and maybe in time she may feel ready to allow another cat into her heart.

Re: Farewell George....

She's saying not, at the moment, but I know that may change as time goes by. She enjoyed George's company immensely, he'd walk in the room and she's say "Hello George" and she's always, ALWAYS get a reply and a quivering tale whilst he stood to get his back rubbed.

He was knocked over by a car on the main road in front of her bungalow a few years back, the culprit drove off. The person behind them stopped and picked him up, took him to the local vet, then came back and put a note through every other door of the street saying what they'd done. She knew instinctively it was George, and what luck that her door was one of the dropped ones.........he'd broken his pelvis, and was cage bound for quite some time, but he recovered well. She was distraught then in case he had to be pts, but thankfully he was alright.

She's had those extra years, I've only ever seen her as sad when my dad died. Painful watching your mum cry, but she'll be ok. She doesn't get out much now, she's nearly 70, she only has me and my sister and George for company. I'll pass on your messages, thank you everyone, she'll be comforted by those.
