Gaspode rat 08-07-11

Gaspode came to us all the way from Norfolk in December with his brothers Qu and Otto. His mum had been left in a hutch at the end of someones garden with a big group of rats. There weren't that many left by the time they could be rescued as they had had to survive with no food or water except what they got from the snow. All the remaining females were pregnant, thankfully Gaspode didn't have to be born into that nightmare. Made famous by the white bunny shape on his berky belly he was the lickiest rat I've ever had. He used to groom so hard it could hurt! He was a squealy boy who really wasn't that keen on being handled, and as lazy as they come...typical buck.

Gaspode liked to roll out of bed in the morning. This morning he rolled out of bed, fell just 15cm onto the side of a litter tray and broke his back. The vet said the fall on its own wasn't high enough and as the litter trays are the only decor in there (intro cage) that he must have fallen onto that. The break was severe enough to be felt without the need for an x-ray. Although not in any pain the damage was enough that he would have to have had 24/7 nursing care for the rest of his life, with constant cleaning to prevent ulcers forming. I felt this was a rather miserable prospect for him, although I was prepared to do it I decided it would be kinder to have him put to sleep. he was 8 months old.

This was totally my fault for not making sure there was clear space under the shelf. Although I had no idea such a short fall could end this way there is no excuse for ignorance. My bunny baby died because I was too stupid to look after his safety better. Please make sure your cage set up is safe, even little falls can kill.

I am so sorry for your loss.
Try not to blame yourself. It was not done on purpose and if you had of realised you would have done something about it.

R.I.P Gaspode and scamper freely at rainbow bridge xx
