Celandine mouse
I didn't have much of a chance to say goodbye to my little girl as she left us the morning we went away on holiday last weekend. Celandine was a rescue girl that came to us with her sister and two daughters. Very small, the unfortunate victim of bad breeding and we never really thought they would all be with us very long. Around a year old she developed a tumour on her side last Monday. With a lot of experience of tumours we decided to leave her until it became an issue, but it was growing slowly and we expected her to last a few weeks at least. We were surprised to find a second tumour had grown overnight to a much larger size between her rear legs and by Friday morning she was growing a third on her cheek that was the size of a pea within two-three hours. She clearly wasn't going to make it so I made the decision to have her pts before we went away that afternoon.
I always feel down when these things happen. Irresponsible breeding and missexing destroys these little guys and people like us are the ones who pick up the pieces and are there at the end to witness the results. This is when I realise I can no longer do this and decide to have a break from mice. With an 18month old girl, 2 year old boy, Celandine's 1 year old sister and her two young daughters who will ultimately be lucky to see a year I have to have a break from this. Celandine was a beautiful girl, with a gorgeous heart shape on her face. She had a lovely temperament and although her and the girls are not keen on handling they have never been agressive and once caught are happy to crawl over you. She was an excellent Mum having to run after her two monkey girls and she was good company for Solo, often found by his side. Her passing marks the start of an end of an era for me. I've had so many rescue mice in just a few years. But its a thankless task requiring a heart of steel I just don't have. Each one, despite their size or temperament leaves a little hole when they pass. Celandine will be sorely missed but will have a lot of company over the bridge. Run free girlie xx This is the best photo of her I have, she wasn't keen on the camera! ![]()
