I've just had my beautiful white bunny, Daisy, put to sleep.
She was a rescue bunny so I don't know how old she was but she wasn't young - I've had her a good few years.
In the time I've had her she had to have an eye removed and her teeth ground down every few months. Earlier this year she had a chest infection and two lumps appeared. She also needed her teeth doing so I had to risk an anaesthetic and she got through it. The vet did think the lumps could be cancer but she enjoyed the rest of the summer. I let her eat what she wanted, knowing more lumps were likely to appear. Her favourite was wholemeal bread. She really loved that.
Last week Dylan, another of my bunnies, got myximatosis. I had no idea that bunnies could catch it from mosquitos - I thought it was just from bird droppings or wild bunnies - so hadn't had any of them vaccinated. Molly and Daisy caught it too. Dylan and Molly seem OK now but it affected poor Daisy's chest and she was struggling to breath.
I took her to the vet Monday and Tuesday and she was given antibiotics and an injection to bring down her temperature but her breathing was much worst this morning. She was still eating so I gave her her medication and made an appointment for this evening. She was far more snuffly and her ears were swollen so the vet agreed with me it was kindest to have her PTS.
She gave her an injection on her side and then I held her on my lap while it took effect. I kissed her and told her how much I loved her and what a special bunny she was. I tried not to cry and upset her but failed miserably

It took a long while and even when she stopped breathing it took ages for her heart to stop. I felt awful then - she must have been quite strong.
I feel guilty because she wasn't vaccinated, although the vet did say it was possible the cancer had spread to her lungs. She had been slightly wheezy ever since she had her last op for her teeth when the lumps were removed.
Daisy was a big white bunny with a red eye. She was incredibly gentle - just let me bathe her (she couldn't clean her rear end properly), and give her medication. She was very, very special and I will miss her so much.
